JOB PURPOSE / SUMMARY

The Superintendent ensures projects are delivered successfully and on time. They collaborate with engineers and subcontractors to define project needs and oversee staff performance.

J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc. is currently looking for a proven Construction Superintendent with experience in utility and similar type projects. This position is based out of our Beltsville, MD office supervising projects that range from Baltimore to D.C., Delaware to Virginia.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for all field activities, including direction and coordination of direct labor, subcontractors, and materials, on construction projects assigned. This position requires a highly professional and organized individual who can work in a fast-paced construction business environment.
  • Follow, implement, and enforce safety policies and maintain a safe operating worksite by ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, such as OSHA and contract requirements.
  • Enforce all safety policies and requirements with all vendors and subcontractors.
  • Planning, scheduling, and supervision of trade employee activities and subcontractors.
  • Efficient and effective use of assigned resources.
  • Assess labor and equipment resource needs and match to load accordingly.
  • Communicate project issues, employee issues, and client issues to the project manager.
  • Submission of accurate foreman’s reports and other paperwork on a timely basis.
  • Report all general, automobile, and safety incidents to the Home Office.
  • Seek additional project work from clients.
  • Ongoing and day-to-day maintenance of good relations with clients and public officials such as police, and DPW employees.
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of assigned projects.
  • Communicate with owner, client, company.
  • Prepare for and attend internal and external project meetings.
  • Resolves construction issues in the field on a continual basis.
  • Coordinate to various trade work with other departments, contractors, and subcontractors, to keep project production flowing continuously.
  • Monitors compliance with company safety program. Seeks the assistance of the safety department to resolve safety issues. Disciplines infractions of safety protocols as necessary. Ensures that trade personnel are properly outfitted for the required work.
  • Monitors completion of entry permits, and CDL trip books period takes any necessary corrective action to see that documents are understood and properly completed.
  • Maintains communications with project management and estimating to ensure that project is built in compliance with all drawings, specifications, standards, and codes.
  • Assist project manager in developing and implementing project plan and schedule.
  • Orders materials in accordance with company policy. Ensures that crews are always supplied with adequate tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Provides production information to the project manager. Prepares billing worksheets and other pre invoice documents for review and approval by the project manager.
  • Review invoice quantities with client prior to formal invoice submission to minimize delay in payment and capture all appropriate revenue for the period.
  • Reviews budget versus actual cost, with the project manager. Implements actions that will improve the profitability of the project.
  • Evaluate field design change requests from client and provide feedback to the project manager.
  • Identify discrepancies between construction drawings, specifications, and contractual obligations and report to the project manager.
  • Provide technical assistance such as interpretation of drawings, recommend construction methods, and equipment use as needed.
  • Acts as a resource to less experienced Superintendent and project managers and develop solutions to more difficult construction sites.
  • Attends preconstruction meetings and provides input for the selection of appropriate four persons for the project.
  • Acts as a resource for the general Superintendent as required.
  • Develops and trains at subordinates, recruits, hires, and disciplines reports as appropriate.
  • Assist with Labor Relations through effective communications with union stewards, and general labor force on a day-to-day basis.
  • Assist in resolving jurisdictional disputes. Provides input to project manager.
  • Work with management team to implement and achieve any EEO goals for projects.
  • Perform project closeout punch list in accordance with contractual obligations.
  • Provide overall quality control oversight for assigned projects.
  • Ensure form and conduct end document safety toolbox talks and job hazard analysis per corporate guidelines.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management)
  • Knowledge of operation of standard office equipment
  • Overall knowledge of MS Office
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to work in an office environment involving the use of office machines
  • Ability to work in the field environment and to tolerated various outdoor weather conditions for extended periods of time
  • Ability to drive vehicle to and form job sites and yard locations
  • Ability to walk, kneel, squat, sit for extended periods of time in an 8-hour day
  • Ability to climb a minimum of two steps, possibly more
  • Must have good hand eye coordination
  • Must be able to lift 25 + lbs.
