Job summary

Mercor is seeking experimental scientists and engineers specializing in superconductors to support a frontier AI research lab building advanced models for materials science and the physical sciences.

This is hands-on, expert-level work requiring deep, specialised knowledge of superconducting materials, synthesis, characterisation, transport measurements, thin films, and superconducting devices to generate, structure, and evaluate the scientific data these models learn from.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with superconducting materials classes and systems.
  • Experience with synthesis or processing methods such as solid-state synthesis or thin-film deposition.
  • Ability to characterize superconducting properties via electrical transport, magnetometry, and cryogenic measurements.
  • Understanding Tc, Jc, critical fields, Meissner effect, vortex dynamics, and structure–property relationships.
  • Experience with thin films or device fabrication using PLD, sputtering, or lithography is a plus.
  • Advanced degree (PhD/MS) or equivalent hands-on research in a related field.
  • Clear written English and ability to explain complex experimental results concisely.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute deep domain expertise across synthesis, characterisation, experimental superconductivity, fabrication, and device physics to build high-quality training data.
  • Review and evaluate AI-generated reasoning related to superconducting materials and phenomena, identifying errors and improving accuracy.
  • Design and solve expert-level problems involving Tc, Jc, critical fields, and vortex behaviour.
  • Analyse experimental results from XRD, SEM/TEM, SQUID/VSM magnetometry, transport measurements, spectroscopy, and cryogenic experiments.
  • Rate and rank model outputs against defined scientific criteria with clear written reasoning.
  • Structure technical knowledge into well-organised, model-ready data.
  • Deliver reliable, technically rigorous work within defined timelines.
