Overview

The Clinical Supervisor coordinates shift operational flow in alignment with organizational and departmental strategic goals, objectives, and standards. They serve as the hospital’s clinical representative/resource for patients, families, and the healthcare team at both unit and organization levels. This position provides clinical leadership of patient care services and supervises nursing and support staff to ensure developmentally appropriate, high-quality patient care in accordance with applicable federal, regulatory, and professional standards. The Clinical Supervisor promotes quality patient care and an engaging work environment during the assigned shift.

Position Duties

• Coordinates and leads daily clinical operational activities of the unit and organization to deliver quality, family-centered care in an efficient work environment.
• Manages patient throughput by balancing unit patient care activities, overseeing the delivery of care, coordinating admissions, discharges, transfers, and daily rounding on patients and families.
• Oversees staffing processes by coordinating assignments using established staffing levels that match patient needs with staff competencies and skill mix through ongoing assessment of patient and unit needs.
• Monitors unit environment to ensure staff have supplies, equipment, information, and resources needed to provide quality care in a safe environment.
• Staffs, schedules, and appropriately uses nursing and support staff.
• Documentation – updates scheduling, occurrence reports, patient/family concerns, and quality indicators in real time to maximize resolution by the end of the shift.
• Provides a report to the oncoming Clinical Supervisor or designee on status of throughput, staffing, unit environment, schedules, occurrence reports, patient/family concerns, and quality indicators.
• Collaborates with manager to lead, create, and maintain an environment that advocates for staff and promotes engagement through clinical/administrative expertise and professional leadership.
• 1. Demonstrates and promotes clinical leadership as a clinical and systems expert with nursing and interdisciplinary team members in the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of age-specific, individualized patient/family-centered care plans and documented actions.
  2. Accountable for promoting a culture of learning resulting in staff and team development and retention.
• Achieves department/organization outcomes by aligning and managing to organizational metrics.
• 1. Identifies, facilitates, and leads department and organization performance improvement projects that enhance patient care delivery systems and improve staff, patient, family, and customer satisfaction.
  2. Ensures timely completion and investigation of occurrence reports; proactively identifies patient safety risks and participates in risk avoidance strategies.
  3. Takes active interest and accountability for key operational functions, including patient safety issues, timely resolution of complaints, quality improvement initiatives, survey preparation, and patient/family satisfaction follow-up.
  4. Makes decisions that demonstrate sound stewardship of financial resources and collaborates with the team to meet department/organization financial goals.
  5. Serves as a daily operational resource to staff in the management of supplies and equipment.
• Takes personal responsibility to adhere to department/organization policies, procedures, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
• 1. Collaborates with the leadership team to develop, review, revise, and implement evidence-based policies and procedures to assure department consistency and compliance with hospital standards, safety, and accrediting bodies (e.g., Joint Commission, OSHA, HIPAA, Infection Control, Environment of Care, National Patient Safety Goals). Understands the linkage between department requirements and the integrated delivery system; develops risk reduction and error prevention strategies by ensuring staff compliance with policies and procedures.
  2. Mentors staff to operationalize the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics in nursing into daily practice, teaching activities, and the work environment. This includes establishing professional relationships with compassion and respect, ensuring patient privacy, health and safety, and rights; identifying professional boundaries, accountability, and delegation to optimize patient care; maintaining competence and pursuing ongoing personal/professional growth; promoting respectful interactions, safe practices, and high-quality care; and collaborating with disciplines and the community to advance nursing excellence.
• Supports a work environment focused on staff, customers, and patients/families through safe and effective communication.
• 1. Develops leadership skills among staff, including critical thinking, problem solving, engagement, and career advancement.
  2. May participate in the hiring process, including interviews and unit/organization integration.
  3. Monitors staff performance and provides direction, coaching, recognition, counseling, and disciplinary action as appropriate using just culture concepts/processes.
  4. Coordinates with other departments and healthcare professionals to maintain effective communication channels, gather and exchange information, solve problems, and coordinate services to achieve optimal outcomes.
  5. Demonstrates the ability to lead decisions that reflect organizational standards and values, utilizing the Shared Governance process.
  6. Uses the chain of command to communicate real-time patient care, staff, family, and visitor concerns and outcomes.
