Job description

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks & Recreation, Prince George’s County is currently seeking enthusiastic applicants who enjoy working with preschoolers, school-age children, teens and young adults to serve as Summer Program Administrators in inclusive camp settings (including campers with and without disabilities). M-NCPPC is a bi-county agency serving a diverse population of approximately 2 million residents within Montgomery and Prince George's County.

Summer recreation jobs offer invaluable skill-building, leadership, training, and enrichment opportunities. Recreation work experiences allow you to learn and develop management and personnel skills which can enhance your job marketability. M-NCPPC will offer a large variety of summer programs which include in‑person specialty camps, in‑person playtime programs, and in‑person therapeutic recreation programs.

Responsibilities

Candidates’ responsibilities will include day‑to‑day supervision of summer program participants ranging in ages 6‑17, some of whom may have disabilities. Summer Program Administrators have oversight of all paperwork and reference books. They administer the Youth Camp Safety Standards for the program site, ensuring profile forms for participants, staff and volunteers are complete and ready for review. The Administrator will contact parents to obtain missing information and conduct weekly fire and emergency evacuation drills. They keep registration rosters, attendance sheets and sign‑in logs, and maintain the health log.

Administrators collect field trip money, complete rosters, trip/transportation emergency plans, assist with transportation logistics, and maintain the Youth Camp Safety Standard trip book. They secure petty cash funds and track petty cash expenditures (if applicable). The Administrator is responsible for daily cash drops at designated facilities and supports the site Director with supervision of volunteers. Administrators will complete weekly reports, including attendance, custodial, financial, accident, property damage and staff timecards. The Administrator is the point of contact to parents for emergencies and will post site plans near the phones and the emergency evaluation map to ensure the safety of all participants, staff and volunteers during a natural disaster. They assist with the coordination of food service program. Administrators are responsible for establishing and maintaining good rapport with participants, parents, and other staff, ensuring the safety and welfare of participants, enforcing all M‑NCPPC rules and regulations and compliance with Youth Camp Safety Standards. They participate in inventory control, distribute equipment and supplies to participants, and act as a Senior Counselor when administrative duties are completed for the day.

Minimum Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will possess at least 1 year of experience with youth in the field of parks and recreation, physical education, childcare or a related field and 1 year of college (or two years equivalency). Candidates must be 18 years of age.
  • All summer program staff are required to attend pre‑service training, Youth Camp Safety Standards training, food service training (where applicable), and obtain CPR and First Aid certification prior to the beginning of camp.
  • Must enjoy playing and interacting with children.
  • Pass a Maryland State background check.
