Job description

Summer Intern – Manufacturing Engineering

Focus: Multi-axis robotics, directed-energy processing workflows, and production-quality documentation

Location: West Lafayette, IN (HARF)

Work Authorization / Clearance: U.S. Citizen; must be U.S. clearance eligible

Preferred: Active security clearance

Organization: Advanced manufacturing startup supporting military and commercial programs

Role Summary

INTALUS is seeking a Manufacturing Engineering Summer Intern to support machine- and workflow-facing process development on custom multi-axis robotic directed-energy platforms. This role is operations-facing: setup support, fixturing/part handling, parameter capture, traveler discipline, inspection routines, and process documentation. The intern will help standardize repeatable workflows aligned with AS9100D, ISO 9001:2015, and CMMC Level 1–2 expectations, coordinating closely with the Materials Engineering intern for sample handoff and measurement feedback.

Key Responsibilities
1. Manufacturing process development (machine and workflow-facing)
  • Support setup and supervised operation of multi-axis robotic motion systems and directed-energy tooling.
  • Assist with fixturing concepts, part handling, tooling readiness, and setup checklists to improve repeatability.
  • Capture process parameters, run IDs, equipment configuration states, and build conditions using standardized templates (objective evidence discipline).
  • Support prototype builds, parameter validation trials, and workflow standardization (sequencing, handoffs, rework paths).
2. Inspection integration and process control
  • Help define in-process checks and inspection routines (what to measure, when to measure, how to record).
  • Support build records (travelers, route sheets, inspection signoffs where applicable).
  • Coordinate sample handoffs to Materials Engineering and ensure traceability continuity.
3. Quality system buildout (AS9100 / ISO 9001 readiness)
  • Draft SOPs, work instructions, process flow diagrams, setup sheets, maintenance procedures, and calibration routines.
  • Support nonconformance logging discipline and corrective action inputs (under direction).
  • Help organize audit-ready objective evidence: revision control, record retention, training signoffs, and controlled forms.
4. CMMC-aligned operational practices (Level 1–2)
  • Assist in mapping where manufacturing data is created/stored/transmitted (parameters, travelers, inspection outputs).
  • Support checklists and short training materials for reinforcing controlled data handling practices.
5. Engineering operations support
  • Support time studies, throughput observations, and utilization tracking to inform capacity planning.
  • Assist with procurement support for tooling/consumables and readiness reviews.
What You'll Gain
  • Hands-on exposure to multi-axis robotic motion systems and directed-energy manufacturing workflows.
  • An inside look at how aerospace/defense suppliers build compliant manufacturing systems from scratch.
  • Experience creating documentation, travelers, and quality process artifacts that support future certification (AS9100 / ISO 9001).
  • The opportunity to make a direct impact on a startup manufacturing foundation within the Purdue innovation ecosystem.
