Job summary

Legal Aid DC, a nonprofit serving the District of Columbia, seeks a Summer Intern to join the Housing Law Unit for a 10-week program from May 27 to August 6, 2027. The internship is full-time (40 hours/week) and primarily based at the NW DC office, with potential remote work if approved by the supervisor.

The role offers substantive assignments on eviction defense and affordable housing preservation projects, supervised by a staff attorney in the Housing unit.

Qualifications

• Summer law students are expected to apply for outside funding to support their internship.
• Legal Aid DC provides a scholarship of up to $6,440 to eligible interns.
• The internship offers substantive assignments with immediate impact on clients.

Responsibilities

• Perform legal and factual research for eviction defense and housing projects.
• Draft pleadings, motions, and client correspondence.
• Observe court or administrative hearings and take notes.
• Assist with intakes and client meetings.
• Prepare for hearings and draft outlines, exhibits, and witness prep.
• Assist with discovery requests and responses as needed.
• Support L&T courthouse project and attend housing unit meetings and trainings.
