Job summary

Bates White Economic Consulting, a boutique firm based in Washington, DC, offers a 10-week paid Summer Consultant Program for rising seniors to develop knowledge, acumen, and technical skills while contributing to the firm.

Summer Consultants analyze data using Stata, R, Python, SQL, and Excel; conduct research, synthesize information, and present results. You’ll collaborate with a range of colleagues and participate in trainings and events.

Qualifications

• We seek rising seniors with a strong quantitative background and an interest in economics or related fields.
• An undergraduate degree is required; majors across disciplines are welcome.
• Experience with Stata, R, Python, or SQL is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

• Analyze large data sets using Stata, R, Python, SQL, and Excel.
• Conduct industry research and synthesize information for reports.
• Communicate results through data visualization and presentations.
• Collaborate with colleagues from Consultants to PhD Economists and Partners.
• Attend trainings to develop technical and soft skills.

What you’ll do

Summer Consultants receive intensive training so they can meaningfully contribute to many aspects of a project. Throughout our 10-week Summer Consultant Program, you will:

• Analyze large quantities of data using programs such as Stata, R, Python, SQL, and Excel.
• Conduct industry research, review legal documents, and synthesize relevant information.
• Communicate results through data visualization, reports, and presentations.
• Collaborate closely with colleagues at all levels and backgrounds, from Consultants to PhD Economists and Partners.
• Develop technical skills (R, Stata, Excel) and soft skills through intensive trainings.
• Organize a firmwide event to raise money for a nonprofit of your choice.
• Develop valuable connections and career guidance though our Speaker Series with senior leadership, career path panel, practice-area lunch-and-learns, and more.
• Enjoy numerous social events such as dinners, outings in DC, including sporting events, a casino night, and more.

We seek individuals who are motivated by intellectually stimulating work, are driven and excited to learn, and exude strong teamwork and leadership skills. Strong candidates:

• Are pursuing an undergraduate degree (required). A technical background (e.g., economics, finance, computer science, engineering, etc.) is helpful but not required. All majors accepted.
• Will graduate between December 2027 and spring 2028.
• Have an aptitude for numbers and an interest in programming and analysis. Experience with Stata, R, or a similar programming language is helpful, but not required.
• Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a team-oriented environment.
• Thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Demonstrate independence, tenacity, self-confidence, and creativity.
• Can legally work in the United States without requiring sponsorship now or in the future. Note: Candidates who will rely upon CPT or OPT for work authorization as Summer Consultants and will need future visa sponsorship by Bates White if offered a role as a Consultant are discouraged from applying for the Summer Consultant Program. Bates White does not provide work visa sponsorship for incoming Consultants.
