Job summary

BerryDunn is seeking a Justice & Public Safety Consulting Intern to join our Local Government Practice Group in Portland, Maine. The internship is designed to provide guided coaching, training, and hands-on experience across consulting activities for local government clients during a May–August session.

You will work under supervision, develop reporting and presentation skills, assist with data collection and analysis, and participate in client projects while gaining exposure to governance, IT

Qualifications

  • Pursuing BA/BS/MS in J&PS, Political Science, Finance, MIS, or related field.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in relationship building, including writing and communication.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Public administration/government experience is a plus.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.

Responsibilities

  • Develop understanding of the general consulting process.
  • Follow diagnostic, data collection, fact finding, and data analysis practices.
  • Develop skill in written and verbal communications.
  • Keep supervisors informed of project status.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training; work as a team on client projects.
  • Provide ad hoc assessments and client briefings.
  • Assist with project management tasks: tracking, reporting, and document repository.

  • Perform assigned administrative tasks efficiently.
  • Assist in performing consulting engagements, including research and documentation.

Overview

BerryDunn is seeking a Justice & Public Safety Consulting Intern to join our Local Government Practice Group (LGPG). Our Local team focuses on serving the organization, information technology, and management needs of local government agencies. We have worked with hundreds of government agencies throughout the United States. We understand the needs of these agencies, their fiscal constraints, and the commitment to serving constituents. Upon entering the profession you can expect to receive guidance from the supervisor(s), consultant or principal in charge of an engagement or project working with our Justice & Public Safety (J&PS) Teams. Work performed will be closely supervised through coaching and training. With guidance from staff members of the J&PS practice area, you will become familiar with the firm’s systems, operations and relationships. The firm expects you to demonstrate flexibility, have a willingness to seek out advice, and exhibit an ambition for learning. This internship is based in our Portland, Maine office.

We have internship openings with our Local Government Practice Group for:
  • Summer session running from May 25, 2027 to August 6, 2027.

You Will
  • Develop an understanding of the general consulting process.
  • Follow appropriate diagnostic, data collection, fact finding, and data analysis practices.
  • Develop skill in written and verbal communications.
  • Keep supervisors and others informed of status of assigned projects.
  • Participate in staff/team meetings and training and work effectively as a team player on multiple client projects.
  • Provide ad hoc assessments and briefings in response to client requests.
  • Assist with project management tasks such as tracking and reporting project progress, maintaining project document repository, and reviewing deliverables for quality assurance.
  • Develop concise summaries, reports, and presentations of complex data for client leadership.
  • Perform assigned administrative tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Assist in performing consulting engagements of all sizes. This may involve such tasks as conducting research, assisting with detailed and technical aspects of the engagement, documenting the engagement and assisting with engagement reporting.
You Have
  • Working toward a BA/BS/MS Degree in J&PS disciplines, Political Science, Finance, Management Information Systems or something similar.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in relationship building, including excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Relevant work experience in government or public administration field is a plus.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
Compensation Details

The hourly rate for this role is $30 per hour. This rate range represents BerryDunn’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible compensation at the time of posting. If an applicant possesses experience, education, or other qualifications more than the minimum requirements for this posting, that applicant is encouraged to apply, and a final rate may then be based on those additional qualifications; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The hourly rate for the finalist selected for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, years of experience, depth of experience, seniority, merit, education, training, amount of travel, and other relevant business considerations.
