About Alvarez & Marsal

Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) is a global consulting firm with entrepreneurial, action and results-oriented professionals. We take a hands-on approach to solving our clients' problems and assisting them in reaching their potential. Our culture celebrates independent thinkers and doers who positivelyimpactour clients and shape our industry. The collaborative environment and engaging work—guided by A&M's core values of Integrity, Quality, Objectivity, Fun, Personal Reward, and Inclusive Diversity—are why our people love working at A&M.

Position Summary
  • The Summer Analyst Internship is a 7-week immersion in public sector consulting for rising seniors (and exceptional rising juniors). You will join active engagement teams serving federal, state, and local government clients. The internship is the primary pathway to a full-time Analyst offer upon graduation, and if you perform well, you may receive a return offer before you begin your final year of school. This program is designed for individuals currently enrolled as undergraduates and graduating between December 2027 and August 2028.

How you will contribute
  • Serve as a member of a client engagement team, with relevant workstream responsibility

  • Gather, structure, and analyze data to test hypotheses about client problems

  • Use the firm's AI tools to accelerate research, drafting, and analysis — and learn to verify, challenge, and improve AI-generated output

  • Build components of client deliverables, including analyses, models, slides, and briefing materials

  • Present your work to engagement leadership and, where appropriate, to clients

  • Conduct interviews and working sessions with client staff and stakeholders

  • Participate in structured learning, including case skills, public sector foundations, AI-augmented consulting methods, and professional communication

  • Receive a dedicated buddy and Performance Advisor with assessments and evaluations provided at mid-point and end of internship

Who and What We Are Looking For

Critical Thinking: You question assumptions — including your own and, and your AI tools'. You can tell the difference between a plausible answer and a correct one, and you dig until you know which one you have.

Structured Problem Solving: You can take a messy, ambiguous question (\\why is this program underperforming?) and break it into pieces you can test. You form hypotheses early and change them when the evidence indicates so.

Analytical Rigor: You are comfortable with numbers, including building financial models sense-checking figures, and drawing insight from data rather than just reporting it. Any major is welcome. Quantitative confidence is required; however, a quantitative degree is not.

AI Literacy: You have hands-on experience using generative AI tools for real work, including research, writing, analysis, or coding, and you understand their failure modes. We will assess: (1) can you direct an AI tool effectively toward a goal; (2) can you critically evaluate its output — spotting errors, gaps, and hallucinations; (3) do you use AI transparently and responsibly. You do not need technical AI training. You need judgment about when to trust it, when to verify, and when to do the thinking yourself.

Relationship Building: Consulting is a team sport played in other people's buildings. You listen well, earn trust across differences, contribute to team culture, and treat everyone — from client executives to front-line staff — with genuine respect.

Leadership and Initiative: You have led something real — a team, a project, a organization, a comeback — and can talk concretely about what you did and what you learned.

Mission Orientation: You should find that motivating, not incidental.

The Lifestyle and What This Role Demands

Consulting is demanding, and we would rather you know that now:

  • Pace: Engagements move fast, deadlines are real, client expectations are high, and some weeks will be intense (50-60 hours during peak periods). We work hard to protect weekends and predictable time off, and we mean it, but this is not a 9-to-5 work environment.

  • Ambiguity: You will regularly be asked to make progress on questions no one has fully defined. That is the role. If you need complete instructions to start, consulting will frustrate you; if ambiguity energizes you, it is the best training ground there is.

  • Travel: Public sector work is often client-site based. Expect frequent travel to client locations (up to 4 days per week on some engagements).

  • Feedback intensity: You will receive more direct feedback in 7 weeks than many receive in 2 years. It is how we develop people, and you should want that.

  • The reward: In exchange, you get responsibility, mentorship, skill-building, and exposure to senior leaders and public sector missions that most careers take a decade to reach.

Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate, graduating between December 2027 and August 2028

  • All majors welcome; record of academic excellence

  • Demonstrated leadership in campus, work, athletics, military, or community settings

  • Demonstrated experience using generative AI tools for substantive work (coursework, projects, research, or employment)

  • Authorization to work in the United States now and in the future; some engagements may require citizenship and / or ability to obtain a security clearance. A&M will not sponsor for this role.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

The Conversion Path

Interns are evaluated on capability (problem solving, financial analysis, AI-augmented work quality), client skills (communication, presence, relationship building), and culture & teamwork. Strong performers may receive a full-time Analyst offer at the end of the summer, to begin following graduation.
