Duties, Responsibilities & Other
  • This position is similar to a utility locator or designator and requires a minimum of 4‑8 years of utility locating or designating experience using various pipe and cable locating devices, including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). It also requires selection and implementation of proper traffic signage maintenance and adherence to safety precautions. Experience in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) according to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is necessary. Surveying, CADD, and vacuum excavation truck experience are a plus.
  • Target candidates may be required to operate and maintain a vacuum excavation truck and related equipment safely and efficiently. Duties include designating/locating a variety of underground utilities, interpreting as‑built drawings and roadway plans, creating legible field sketches, performing records research, operating and maintaining vacuum excavation equipment, and supervising multiple 2‑ and 3‑person crews. Monthly safety meetings are held to identify potential hazards and implement corrective action plans. Additional duties as assigned may occur.
  • Candidates must be able to follow instructions, provide training and mentoring to crews with a positive can‑do attitude, demonstrate leadership and mentoring skills, accurately locate subsurface utilities in varied site conditions, and perform equipment maintenance tasks as needed. Mechanical aptitude is desired.
  • A valid current driver’s license is required, along with the ability to obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical card for Commercial Motor Vehicle operation. A current Commercial Driver’s License is a plus, and NULCA or other certifications are a plus.
  • Applicants must be able to lift 50 pounds, walk extended periods, work in all weather conditions, and be willing to work evenings, weekends, and travel for overnight or extended stay projects as required.
