Bateman Civil Survey Co in Apex, NC is seeking a field-based SUE Technician 2 to conduct on-site investigations, designate and map underground utilities using EM locators and GPR.

You will classify utilities per ASCE 38-22, operate locating and GPS equipment, and collaborate with engineers and project managers while mentoring junior staff and maintaining OSHA safety standards.

Qualifications

• 2-4 years of field experience in utility locating, surveying, or subsurface utility engineering.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites.
• Technical training or an associate’s degree in surveying, GIS, or civil engineering is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Conduct utility designation, verification, and mapping using EM locators and GPR.
• Identify and classify underground utilities per ASCE 38-22 standards.
• Operate and maintain locating equipment and GPS data collection devices.
• Collaborate with SUE Analyst to integrate data into deliverables.
• Provide real-time field documentation, sketches, and reports.
• Assist with vacuum excavation (potholing) to expose utilities when needed.
• Communicate with project managers and utility owners regarding conflicts.
• Provide mentorship to junior field employees.
• Ensure field safety compliance with OSHA protocols.
• Provide training and guidance to SUE/Survey Tech I.

About the position

This role is field-based and involves conducting on-site investigations to identify, designate, and map underground utilities using geophysical locating equipment. The SUE Technician 2 will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and efficient utility data collection for engineering and construction projects.

Essential functions:

• Conduct utility designation, verification, and mapping using electromagnetic (EM) locators, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and other geophysical tools.
• Perform field investigations to identify and classify underground utilities per ASCE 38-22 standards.
• Operate and maintain subsurface utility locating equipment and GPS data collection devices.
• Work alongside SUE Analyst to collect and integrate SUE data into project deliverables.
• Provide real-time field documentation, sketches, and reports for utility data findings.
• Assist with vacuum excavation (potholing) to expose utilities when necessary.
• Communicate with project managers, surveyors, engineers, and utility owners regarding utility conflicts and findings.
• Provide mentorship and professional development to junior field employees.
• Ensure field safety compliance, following OSHA and company safety protocols.
• Provide training and guidance to SUE/Survey Tech I as needed.

Requirements:

• High school diploma required; technical training or an associate’s degree in surveying, GIS, or civil engineering is a plus.
• 2-4 years of field experience in utility locating, surveying, or subsurface utility engineering.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites.

Pay:

• Starting at $25 per hour depending upon experience
