Job summary

Pickett, an ESP Associates company, is seeking a SUE/Survey Field Technician in Lakeland, FL. This hybrid, full-time role supports a range of survey and utility designation projects in outdoor environments across right-of-ways and construction sites.

You will assist with vacuum excavation, GPR locating, records research, and field data collection while working with a team under the supervision of a Party Chief. A high school diploma is required, and safety and reliability are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Hands-on experience with vacuum excavation and/or GPR strongly preferred.
• Experience designating utilities and doing records research is a plus.
• DOT, municipal or public utility project experience a plus.
• Ability to work safely and in a team.
• Must be able to pass drug screen and background check.

Responsibilities

• Learn basic measurements and record field data.
• Support SUE tasks in the field including vac truck and GPR locating.
• Assist crew with daily workload and field tasks.
• Perform utility designating and records research.
• Upload/download data from field devices.
• Operate survey instruments and level staff.
• Prepare field sketches and photos.
• Complete daily checklists and timesheets.
• Maintain equipment and charging of instruments.
• Undertake other field survey and SUE duties as assigned.

About the Role:

This SUE/Survey Field Technician position works with a team of field crew members to complete a wide variety of survey and utility designation projects.

Projects may include boundary, topographic, right-of-way acquisition, transmission line, transportation, wetland, construction, and subsurface utility engineering (SUE) surveys as clients require.

This is an outdoor position that will require you to be in areas ranging from right of ways, construction sites, agriculture sites, woodland sites, swamp, wetlands, and everything in-between.

What You Will Be Doing:

• Learn basic measurements and calculations to record field data
• Support SUE tasks in the field, including vacuum excavation (vac truck) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) locating, along with Electromagnetic (EM) pipe & cable locating equipment
• Assist Party Chief and other crew members with the daily workload
• Perform utility designating and records research
• Daily uploading and downloading of data collectors
• Operate survey total stations, data collectors, and levels
• Prepare and organize field sketches and digital photographs
• Complete daily checklists and timesheets
• Daily care and charging of survey instruments
• Other field survey and SUE duties as assigned

What You Bring:

• Must possess a high school diploma or acceptable equivalency (required)
• Hands-on experience with vacuum excavation (vac truck) and/or Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) strongly preferred
• Previous experience designating utilities and performing records research a plus, preferably in an engineering design environment
• Experience with DOT, municipal, and/or public utility projects a plus
• Surveying and/or drafting experience a plus, but not required
• Ability to work in a safe manner and always obey safety regulations
• Strong desire to advance your knowledge and keep up to date with upgrades in technology
• Ability to communicate technical information both verbally and in writing
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team environmentStrong organizational skills while performing field operations
• Must be at least 21 years old, possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record acceptable to our company insurance provider (this is a condition of initial and continued employment) (required)
• Physical ability to work outdoors and on construction sites under all weather conditions
• This position may consist of standing, walking, sitting, lifting up to 50 lbs., bending/stooping, reaching over head, repetitive motions, climbing (ladders, stairs, hills, etc.), wearing personal protective equipment, and driving a company vehicle
• Ability to work overtime as required or travel out of town for work assignments
• Office work may also be required on an as-needed basis
• Candidate must be able to pass a drug screen, background check, and have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the company's driving (MVR) policy
