Job summary

Bolton & Menk, Inc. in Raleigh, NC, is seeking a SUE Field Technician II to support our Emerging Markets & Services team. You will help designate utilities, collect data, and verify underground infrastructure to aid planning, design, and construction of community projects.

The role emphasizes field work, collaboration with engineers and owners, travel to sites, and adherence to ASCE 38-22 standards. A high school diploma and 2+ years of related experience are required; associate degree preferred.

Qualifications

• 2+ years experience in utility locating/SUE or related field services.
• Experience operating geophysical locating equipment preferred.
• Knowledge of ASCE 38 standards and utility quality levels preferred.

Responsibilities

• Designate and document utilities using geophysical locating equipment and ASCE 38-22 QoL.
• Assist with utility surveying, mapping, and data collection for accurate deliverables.
• Operate vacuum excavation equipment to expose and verify locations.
• Operate and maintain company vehicles, vacuum trucks, and field equipment.
• Assist in traffic control plans and safety during field operations.
• Maintain project documentation and field notes, protecting confidentiality.
• Travel frequently to project sites as needed.

Bolton & Menk has an exciting opportunity for a SUE Field Technician II to join our Emerging Markets & Services team.

As a Top Workplace, this position offers the opportunity to work with a growing Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) practice that supports transportation, municipal, water, energy, and land development projects throughout the United States. The SUE Field Technician II plays a critical role in accurately locating, documenting, and verifying underground utility infrastructure to support the successful planning, design, and construction of community infrastructure projects.

This position provides the opportunity to work primarily in the field while collaborating with engineers, surveyors, utility owners, contractors, and fellow SUE professionals to deliver high-quality utility data that reduces risk and supports informed project decisions.

What You Will Be Doing

• Utility Designation: Designate and document existing underground utilities utilizing geophysical locating equipment and industry standards, including ASCE 38-22 Quality Levels.
• Survey & Data Collection: Assist with utility surveying, mapping, and utility data collection activities to support accurate project deliverables.
• Vacuum Excavation: Operate vacuum excavation equipment to safely expose and verify underground utility locations.
• Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain company vehicles, vacuum trucks, and specialized field equipment including utility locating devices, compressors, air lances, concrete saws, and hand tools.
• Traffic Control & Safety: Assist in implementing approved traffic control plans and follow all applicable safety requirements during field operations.
• Documentation: Maintain accurate project documentation, field notes, and records while protecting the confidentiality of company and client information.
• Travel: Travel frequently to project sites and other project-related locations as necessary to support project delivery.

What We Are Looking For

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in Surveying Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, Geomatics, or a related field preferred.
• 2+ years of experience in utility locating, Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), surveying, construction inspection, utility construction, or related field services.
• Experience operating geophysical utility locating equipment preferred.
• Experience with vacuum excavation equipment or utility exposure techniques preferred.
• Basic understanding of ASCE 38 standards and utility quality levels.
• Knowledge of underground utility systems including water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, electric, gas, and telecommunications infrastructure.
• Ability to read maps, utility records, construction plans, and field documentation.
• Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work safely in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
• Valid driver's license
• Ability to travel frequently to project sites and work extended periods away from home as project needs dictate.
