Job summary

McKim & Creed, Inc. is seeking a mid-level SUE Analyst in Norfolk, Virginia to lead field crews and coordinate utility investigations (QL-A, QL-B).

You will bridge field execution with project-level accountability under a PM or SUE Manager, leveraging your established relationships in utilities and municipal sectors. This developmental role offers mentorship, expanded project responsibility, and exposure to client management, scope development, and proposal support as you grow into a Project

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in subsurface utility engineering, utility locating, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience directing field crews and producing SUE deliverables at Quality Levels A and B.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional relationships with clients, utility owners, or municipal contacts.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the operation of SUE field crews, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, budget adherence, safety.
  • Perform QL-A and QL-B utility investigations using EM designation and GPR.
  • Conduct utility records research (QL-D) and field designation (QL-C) activities in support of project scopes.
  • Prepare field notes, test hole diagrams, and exhibits documenting utilities' location, depth, size, and material.
  • Process field work into finished drawings and deliverables using Bluebeam Revu.
  • Coordinate with engineers, surveyors, clients, and local agencies to communicate project status and address field conditions.
  • Identify utility owners to request utility information and confirm locate requirements.
  • Support QA/QC review of field data and deliverables to uphold McKim & Creed quality standards.
  • Mentor and guide SUE Technician staff, providing field instruction and safety oversight.
  • Leverage existing professional relationships with utility owners, municipalities, contractors, and other field contacts to support business development and client engagement efforts.

Position Summary

The SUE Analyst is a mid-level professional responsible for the operation of SUE field crews and the production of accurate, thorough, and timely utility investigation deliverables. Working under the direction of a SUE Project Manager or SUE Manager, the SUE Analyst serves as a technical lead in the field and office, bridging crew-level execution with project-level accountability. McKim & Creed seeks a motivated professional with established field-level relationships in the utility, municipal, or infrastructure sectors, and the drive and aptitude to grow into a Project Coordinator role over time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct the operation of SUE field crews, confirming accuracy, thoroughness, adherence to schedules and budgets, responsive service, and safe work sites
  • Perform and oversee Quality Level A and B (QL-A and QL-B) utility investigations using electromagnetic designation and ground-penetrating radar (GPR)
  • Conduct utility records research (QL-D) and field designation (QL-C) activities in support of project scopes
  • Prepare field notes, test hole diagrams, and exhibits documenting the location, depth, size, and material of identified utilities
  • Process field work into finished drawings and deliverables using Bluebeam Revu
  • Coordinate with engineers, surveyors, clients, and local agencies to communicate project status and address field conditions
  • Identify and contact utility owners to request utility information and confirm locate requirements
  • Support QA/QC review of field data and deliverables to uphold McKim & Creed quality standards
  • Mentor and guide SUE Technician staff, providing field instruction and safety oversight

This position is structured as a developmental role for a candidate with the ambition and capability to advance into a Project Coordinator position. McKim & Creed will invest in the right individual through mentorship, expanded project responsibility, and exposure to client management, scope development, and proposal support. Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in subsurface utility engineering, utility locating, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience directing field crews and producing SUE deliverables at Quality Levels A and B
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional relationships with clients, utility owners, or municipal contacts
Skills and Competencies
  • Proficiency with GPR and electromagnetic (EM) locating equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret utility plans, as-built records, and GIS data
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to coordinate among multiple stakeholders
  • Commitment to safety protocols, quality standards, and near-miss reporting in all field and office operations
  • Self-motivated with a long-term interest in project management and client development
Preferred
  • NULCA Certification in EM & GPR
  • Familiarity with CI/ASCE 38-02 Quality Level standards
  • Existing relationships with utility owners, DOT agencies, municipalities, or contractors that could support future client development
Physical Requirements

This position involves a combination of fieldwork and office production. Field activities include outdoor work in varying weather conditions, operation of geophysical detection equipment, and coordination of vacuum excavation crews in active work zones.
