Role Overview

Role: Substitute Teacher – Seasonal/Intermittent

Team: Child Development

Scope: Individual Contributor, Level ES4

Years of Experience: 2+; Location: Ventura, CA

Compensation: $24.50-$25.50/Hr

Responsibilities
  • Provide substitute coverage for classroom teachers in the infant, preschool, and school‑age programs.
  • Handle all aspects of care for children ages 2 months to 9 years.
  • Transport school‑age children to and from approved sites, ensuring safe travel.
  • Stock center supplies and groceries as needed.
  • Implement age‑appropriate, individualized curriculum and facilitate learning through language, songs, games, and activities.
  • Maintain visual supervision and child safety at all times.
  • Build respectful relationships with children, parents, and co‑teachers, honoring individual differences and cultural diversity.
  • Assist in classroom parent communications, including newsletters and activity calendars.
  • Create a structured routine that allows for scheduled meal and rest breaks.
  • Communicate positively with children, families, and staff, fostering a language‑rich environment.
  • Guide children in responsible participation and problem‑solving within a multi‑age program.
  • Partner with parents to support smooth transitions and address concerns or feedback.
  • Support staff with administrative tasks such as newsletters, attendance, shopping lists, and staff‑child ratios in a timely manner.
  • Assist and mentor substitute teachers, providing ongoing support.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in‑service trainings.
  • Direct issues to appropriate persons promptly.
  • Maintain daily inspection reports for transportation.
Physical Requirements
  • Lifting 1–40 pounds from floor to waist‑high table.
  • Kneeling to maintain eye contact at child’s level.
  • Sitting on the floor while working with children.
  • Responding to a child 20–30 feet away within 30 seconds.
  • Carrying a child (1–40 pounds) up to 50–100 feet.
  • Addressing first aid needs for cuts, bruises, and blood/bodily fluids.
  • Communicating clearly and calmly to children, parents, and coworkers.
  • Managing the stress associated with close work with children and families.
  • Performing fine and medium hand manipulation.

Experience You Bring
  • Two years’ experience working with young children (at least 150 hours within the last 6 months).
  • Fifteen (15) units in Early Childhood Education (Growth and Development, Child‑Family & Community, Infant/Toddler studies, School‑age studies, and one other program class).
  • Current driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers with Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Successful completion of fingerprinting and requisite criminal background check compliant with state child‑care licensing.
Preferred Experience
  • AA or BA in ECE or related field.
  • Understanding of Outdoor Classroom Project, Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE), Pyramid Model, and Learning Stories.
  • Fluent in Spanish.
  • Experience with seasonal/intermittent employment schedules (maximum 19 hrs/week, 76 hrs/month, or 500 hrs/rolling 12‑month period).
