Job summary

Sylvania is seeking a Substitute Teacher to cover classroom duties in our Illinois schools starting August 2026. The role requires delivering instruction and supervision in the regular teacher’s absence, following lesson plans, and maintaining classroom discipline.

The ideal candidate holds a valid Illinois Substitute Teaching License (or Short-Term license) and demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with students in grades K–8.

Qualifications

• Must hold a valid Illinois Substitute Teaching License, Short-Term Substitute Teaching License, or other Illinois educator license.
• Credentials must be on file with the district as required.
• Experience substitute teaching or working with children preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Reports to the assigned school as requested by the building principal or designee.
• Implements the regular teacher’s responsibilities, lesson plans, instructional activities, and classroom schedule.
• Corrects work completed by students when appropriate and time permits.
• Maintains proper discipline and a safe, positive, and productive student environment.
• Completes the substitute teacher’s report form and other required documentation.
• Prepares a summary of work completed and the day’s events for the regular teacher.
• Follows school and district policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
• Communicates effectively and professionally with students, staff, and administrators.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• Must hold a valid Illinois Substitute Teaching License, Short-Term Substitute Teaching License, or other valid Illinois educator license that authorizes the individual to serve as a substitute teacher.


• Appropriate credentials and licensure must be on file with the district as required.


• Successful substitute teaching, teaching, or experience working with children preferred.


• Good interpersonal and communication skills.


• Ability to work effectively with students in grades K–8.


• Ability to follow lesson plans, classroom routines, and instructional activities as provided by the regular teacher.
