POSITION TITLE: Substitute Staff (Substitute Aide and Substitute Teacher)

STATUS: As Needed Basis, Substitute

PAY CATEGORY: Paid according to the applicable substitute pay rate for assigned position.

2026-2027 School Year: Substitute Aides - $16.58/Hour; Substitute Teacher - $130/Day REPORTS TO: Building Principal and/or Substitute & Family Leave Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY: Substitute Staff play a vital role in supporting the District's educational mission by ensuring continuity of learning and maintaining a safe, positive, and productive school environment during the absence of regular employees. Substitute Aides provide instructional support, student supervision, clerical assistance, and other services under the direction of certified staff and school administrators, while Substitute Teachers provide classroom instruction, implement lesson plans, and manage the learning environment. All Substitute Staff are expected to demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, sound judgment, and a commitment to student success while adhering to District policies, procedures, and expectations.

ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS

Substitute Staff are expected to regularly review and accept available substitute assignments throughout the school year to remain active in the District's substitute pool. The District reserves the right to remove substitute employees from the active substitute roster when assignment activity does not meet District operational needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
All Substitute Staff
  • Report to the assigned building at least twenty (20) minutes prior to the official school start time unless otherwise directed.
  • Report to the Building Principal or designated administrator upon arrival to receive assignments, schedules, and daily expectations.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, respectful, and positive learning environment by appropriately supervising students in classrooms and other assigned areas.
  • Follow all District policies, Board policies, administrative regulations, school procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and employee information in accordance with applicable laws and District policy.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, punctuality, appropriate appearance, and sound judgment in all interactions.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with administrators, teachers, staff, students, and families, as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, administrators, and the school community.
  • Take all reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, technology, and District facilities.
  • Complete attendance, reports, documentation, and other required records, including end-of-day reports when requested.
  • Promptly report concerns involving student safety, health, discipline, or emergencies to administration.
  • Remain on duty through the assigned workday, including approximately fifteen (15) minutes after student dismissal or until released by administration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, Substitute Coordinator, or designee.
Substitute Aides

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, the Substitute Aide shall:

  • Assist teachers with student arrival, dismissal, and daily classroom routines.
  • Support teachers by organizing classrooms, preparing instructional materials, maintaining classroom resources, and providing clerical assistance, including copying, filing, laminating, data entry, and preparing instructional materials.
  • Assist with clerical duties in school offices, libraries, media centers, or other assigned areas.
  • Supervise students during lunch, recess, hallways, bus loading and unloading, field trips, arrival, dismissal, and other assigned activities.
  • Assist individual students and small groups with teacher-directed instructional activities, practice, reinforcement, and follow-up assignments.
  • Support classroom management by reinforcing appropriate student behavior under the direction of the classroom teacher.
  • Assist students with mobility, positioning, personal care, feeding, toileting, or other physical needs consistent with District training and assigned responsibilities.
  • Support students with disabilities, behavioral needs, or medical needs under the direction of certified staff.
  • Escort students safely throughout the building as assigned.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, organized, and positive learning environment.
Substitute Teachers

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, the Substitute Teacher shall:

  • Review lesson plans, schedules, seating charts, emergency procedures, and instructional materials provided by the regular classroom teacher.
  • Implement lesson plans and instructional activities provided by the regular classroom teacher.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times and locations.
  • Deliver instruction aligned with District curriculum, instructional goals, and classroom expectations.
  • Create and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
  • Promote student engagement, participation, responsibility, and appropriate classroom behavior.
  • Establish reasonable classroom procedures consistent with District and school expectations.
  • Manage classroom behavior in a fair, consistent, and respectful manner.
  • Consult with the Building Principal or designee before deviating from lesson plans or instructional procedures whenever possible.
  • Monitor student participation and progress during assigned instructional activities.
  • Assist administration in implementing school rules, student discipline procedures, and Board policies.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and other required documentation.
  • Leave detailed written notes for the regular classroom teacher regarding instruction completed, student progress, attendance, behavior, and other pertinent information.
  • Report to the Building Principal or designee at the conclusion of the workday.
  • Participate in emergency drills and follow established emergency procedures.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Substitute Aide
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for working with children.
  • Ability to successfully perform assigned duties.
Substitute Teacher

In addition to the requirements above:

  • Valid Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education Substitute Teacher Certificate
  • Prior instructional or educational experience preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, and use hands for fine manipulation and operation of equipment. The employee may be required to reach, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb stairs, and occasionally run in response to student or emergency situations. The employee must regularly lift, carry, push, or pull up to fifty (50) pounds and may occasionally be required to lift or assist with up to one hundred (100) pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment. Employees may be required to assist students with mobility, personal care, transfers, or behavioral interventions consistent with District training and procedures. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employees may be required to board and exit school buses, supervise students indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, and work in classrooms, cafeterias, playgrounds, gymnasiums, hallways, libraries, and other school environments.
