Job summary

District Wide in Owensboro, KY seeks a Substitute SLEO to perform a range of school law enforcement duties. The role supports student safety, enforces state statutes and protects life and property within district campuses. Reports to the Director of Student Services and is classified as full-time with flexible hours as needed.

Must have a high school diploma or GED, a valid Kentucky driver’s license, and at least three years of related experience. Kentucky POST certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of law enforcement activities for an assigned school district; enforce laws and protect life and property.
  • Maintain equipment in proper working condition and document incidents.
  • Prepare accurate reports of crimes, accidents and incidents; respond to emergencies.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, students and parents; coordinate activities and resolve conflicts.
  • Attend parent conferences regarding student conduct violations and provide referrals as needed.
  • Maintain training records and stay current on laws and district policies.
  • Work with others to ensure safety and security across district facilities.

Compensation: Commensurate with salary range on the DCPS Salary Schedule for class code 7824


Hours Per Day: As Needed


Contracted Days: As Needed



QUALIFICATIONS


Required:



  • Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and three years of related experience.

  • Valid Kentucky Driver’s License


Preferred:



  • Kentucky Peace Officer Professional Standards Certification


Knowledge Of:



  • Basic computer skills including use of mouse and keyboard to navigate computer, e-mail, and websites.

  • Elements and appropriate application of state statutes.

  • Geographic area, District facilities, school personnel and community members of assigned District.

  • Applicable sections of the Kentucky Administrative Regulations and other applicable laws.

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Public relations techniques.

JOB DESCRIPTION


Job Summary:


Perform a variety of law enforcement activities for an assigned school District including enforcing state statutes, protection of life and property, suppression of criminal activity, apprehension and prosecution of offenders, regulation of non-criminal conduct, preservation of public peace, enforcement of traffic and parking regulations and conduct investigations.



Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Perform a variety of law enforcement activities for an assigned school District; exercise authority consistent with statutory obligations and comply with lawful orders.

  • Maintain assigned equipment in proper working condition.

  • Prepare and complete accurate and thorough reports of crimes, vehicular accidents and other incidents as necessary.

  • Assist other law enforcement officers as needed.

  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information according to established procedures.

  • Assist injured persons and determine appropriate action; respond to emergency situations.

  • Attend and conduct parent conferences regarding student criminal or code of conduct violations as needed.

  • Provide proper referrals for incidents occurring outside the officer's area of authority or jurisdiction.

  • Effectively communicate with community, staff, parents and students to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or conflicts; maintain positive public relations.

  • Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Prepare and conduct programing for staff and school age students.

  • Conduct, record and maintain training records for the agency.

  • Prioritize and plan work appropriately.

  • Act with good judgement and determine appropriate action in high stress situations within clearly defined guidelines.

  • Work cooperatively with others.

  • Maintain current knowledge of effective law enforcement techniques and research.

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
