Reports To: Director of Health Services

Qualifications:

• LPN/RN Licensure, Tennessee

• Current CPR certification

Purpose Statement:

The role of the school nurse is to provide quality health services to students and staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school setting, reducing health related absenteeism, complying with Tennessee State School Health Guidelines.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Follows procedures as outlined in the Tennessee State School Health Guidelines.

• Maintains clinic, assessing and monitoring the health status of students.

• Dispenses medication in compliance with state guidelines, training staff as needed for assisting with self-medication.

• Plans and manages care for students with acute or chronic health needs, developing Individual Health Plans (IHPs).

• Cares for injuries in an appropriate manner with documentation and parental notification, per nursing evaluation.

• Reviews immunization records, completing audits in a timely manner.

• Conducts required screening programs, working with Coordinated School Health.

• Assists in the prevention of communicable diseases in the school, following nursing protocols.

• Documents and follows up on student referrals, working with school personnel and family to resolve issues. Reports possible neglect/abuse issues to Department of Children’s Services per school policy.

• Performs nursing procedures including but not limited to: tube feedings, glucose monitoring, insulin pump/injections, urinary catheterizations, tracheal suctioning, and nebulizer treatments.

• Follows OSHA guidelines.

• Provides health information for students, parents and staff as needed.

• Participates as a member on the multi-disciplinary teams related to health and safety planning.

• Maintains communication with supervisor, school personnel, and family, meeting the health and safety needs of students.

• Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.

• Models professional behavior with students, staff and parents

• Maintains current LPN/RN License and current CPR Certification per AHA guidelines or Nationally Recognized Program.

• Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Health Services.

Capacity and Ability Requirements:

The usual job demands requires the following physical requirements: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, and physical dexterity.

Terms of Employment:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
