JOB TITLE: Substitute School Nurse

Summary

Plans policies, standards, and objectives of school health program in cooperation with medical authorities and administrative school personnel.

Responsibilities
  1. Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating:
    • School health goals, objectives, and procedures.
    • Programs to assess the health and developmental status of preschool and school populations.
    • Programs to eliminate or minimize health problems that interfere with a student’s learning.
  2. Implements all screening programs mandated by Indiana law.
  3. Develops and maintains a system for providing first aid and emergency care.
  4. Critiques and utilizes current research in school, child, and family health and participates in research as appropriate.
  5. Identifies and reports hazards that may affect environmental health and safety.
  6. Administers medications and treatments to students based on orders, authorizations, and policy.
  7. Administers medications/vaccines to staff as permitted by the Wells County Health Department.
  8. Compiles, maintains, and reviews student health records.
  9. Identifies health problems through assessment, history, and records.
  10. Participates in developing a student’s IEP when requested.
  11. Develops Individualized Health Plans (IHP) as necessary.
  12. Provides educational opportunities and health counseling to students.
  13. Helps students and parents locate community health resources.
  14. Collaborates with community agencies and school staff on health planning.
  15. Supports guidance department in resolving family dynamics affecting health.
  16. Communicates health issues to parents and staff within legal guidelines.
  17. Consults and assists teachers in health education units.
  18. Provides information and training for staff on health issues.
  19. Assists in developing and implementing safety procedures.
  20. Trains staff or volunteers in medical procedures when appropriate.
  21. Maintains personal professional development.
  22. Performs other related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse license
Additional Skills
  • Language: Analyze and interpret professional literature and communicate positively with the community.
  • Mathematical: Perform basic arithmetic operations and compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
  • Reasoning: Follow written, oral, or visual instructions and handle problems with limited standardization.
  • Other: Use technology relevant to duties.
Physical & Working Conditions

Requires regular sitting, use of hands, standing, walking, lifting up to 10 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally. Must adjust vision and has smoke‑free environment with moderate noise.

Employee must remain free of alcohol or non‑prescribed controlled substance abuse.

Employment Terms

Pay and benefits to be determined by the School Board. Performance evaluated by the Superintendent per School Board policy.
