Job summary

The Fay School seeks a Substitute School Nurse to support student health, safety, and well-being by delivering nursing care and implementing health policies and protocols. This role provides coverage in the absence of the School Nurse and collaborates with faculty, staff, and families to ensure continuity of high-quality care.

Responsibilities include triage, medications administration, documentation, and referrals where needed.

  • Provide nursing care within the scope of professional practice and school policies.
  • Administer prescribed medications to students per physician orders and authorization.
  • Provide first aid and emergency care as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential documentation of student visits and treatments.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding health concerns.
  • Make referrals for additional medical evaluation in consultation with the School Nurse.
  • Assist with follow-up care and monitoring of students with health needs.
  • Answer health-related questions and provide guidance within the scope of the role.

Job description

The Substitute School Nurse supports the health, safety, and well-being of students by providing nursing care and administering The Fay School’s health policies, procedures, and clinical protocols. The Substitute School Nurse provides coverage in the absence of, or as needed to support, the School Nurse and helps ensure continuity of high-quality care for students.

The Substitute School Nurse reports to the School Nurseand The Assistant Head of School for Finance, and works collaboratively with faculty, staff, parents/guardians, and School Leadership.

The Substitute School Nurse’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Triage and assess students who present to the School Nurse’s Office for illness, injury, or other health-related concerns.
  • Provide appropriate nursing care within the scope of professional practice and established School policies and procedures.
  • Administer prescribed and authorized medications to students in accordance with physician orders, parent/guardian authorization, School policy, and applicable regulations.
  • Provide first aid and emergency care as appropriate and initiate emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of student visits, treatments, medications, injuries, and other pertinent health information.
  • Maintain and prepare student health records and documentation as needed.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student illness, injury, medication, or other health concerns, as appropriate.
  • Make appropriate referrals for additional medical evaluation, treatment, or follow-up care in consultation with the School Nurse.
  • Assist with follow-up care and monitoring of students with identified health needs.
  • Be available to students, parents/guardians, faculty, and staff to answer appropriate health-related questions and provide guidance within the scope of the role.
  • Follow established procedures for managing communicable illnesses, allergies, chronic health conditions, and other student health concerns.
  • Maintain student health information in accordance with applicable confidentiality requirements and School policies.
  • Support the School, its mission, and School Leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
  • Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the State of Texas.
  • Current CPR/AED certification; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid, medication administration, emergency response, and student health practices.
  • Ability to assess and respond appropriately to student illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multiple supervisors and members of the School community.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in urgent or emergency situations.
