Job summary

A local education institution in Baton Rouge is seeking a Substitute School Bus Driver to ensure safe and timely transportation for students. The successful candidate will be responsible for complying with district policies, maintaining discipline, and conducting regular inspections of the bus. Qualified applicants must have a Louisiana CDL type C or B, and previous driving experience is preferred.

School Bus Driver is responsible for providing professional, safe and timely transportation for students and/or staff to and from school and on special trips, which have been approved by Principals and/or Supervisor.

  • Provide transportation in accordance with District policy and procedure as well as local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Follow designated routes safely and accurately, in accordance with time schedules and stops.
  • Conduct safe and orderly loading and unloading of students.
  • Maintain order and discipline on the school bus at all times.
  • Operate school bus safely during inclement weather. Drive routes as assigned by Principal/Supervisor in emergency situations.
  • Be patient and courteous at all times when working with students, parents, school, and transportation department officials and general public.
  • Performs pre/post trip inspections of bus before and after each driving assignment.
  • Attends safety, in-service, and other meetings scheduled by school or transportation manager.
  • Perform routine operator maintenance including but not limited to: sweeping interior, wiping upholstery, cleaning windshields, and reporting equipment defects.
  • Maintain a list of riders, route summaries and directions of travel for routes on the bus.
  • Notify appropriate personnel when it is necessary to be off the bus.
  • Makes recommendations to Supervisor of unsafe stops and other unsafe conditions.
  • Dresses appropriately to ensure the safe operation of the school bus.
  • Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as needed basis.
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Must be twenty-one years of age and in good mental and physical health.
  • Must hold a Louisiana CDL type C or B (B is preferred)
  • Passenger Endorsement – REQUIRED
  • Air Brakes Authorization
  • A driver must have 30 hours of pre-service training (classroom instruction) and 10 hours of pre-service training (on-bus).
  • Must have current and acceptable driving record verified by DPS/OMV.
  • Must take and pass initial, annual and random drug and alcohol DOT screening requirements.
  • Must take and pass initial and annual physical and eye exam meeting current CDL requirements

  • Sitting for long periods of time.
  • Vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, peripheral, ability to adjust focus and distinguish colors with or without visual aids.
  • Be free of impairment of the use of a foot, leg, hand, finger, or an arm or other structural defects or limitations likely to interfere with the ability to safely control a school bus.
  • Depressing fuel and brake pedal with right foot and leg requiring 70 psi.
  • Ability to communicate with others accurately, loudly, softly, or quickly.
  • Ability to hear, understand and distinguish speech and/or other sounds. For example:
    • In person
    • On the radio and/or the phone
    • Emergency sirens
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, lifting, kneeling, pushing and pulling and reaching.
  • Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifting and /or moving up to 20 pounds.
  • Usual school bus working conditions.
  • May be noisy while transporting students.
  • Temperatures may change from very hot to very cold depending on the location of work and the weather.
