JOB TITLE: Substitute Principal

WORK DAYS PER FISCAL YEAR: On-Call

SUMMARY: The Substitute Principal provides temporary administrative leadership and supervision in the absence of the building Principal or Assistant Principal. This position supports the safe and effective daily operation of the school, provides guidance to certificated and classified staff, addresses student behavior and discipline, communicates with families and staff, and carries out established school and District policies and procedures.

ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

LEADERSHIP:

• Provides administrative leadership and direction during the absence of the building Principal or Assistant Principal.
• Supports a safe, respectful, culturally responsive, and positive learning environment for students and staff.
• Provides guidance and direction to certificated and classified staff regarding daily building operations.
• Makes appropriate administrative decisions within the scope of assigned authority and established District policies and procedures.
• Communicates effectively with students, staff, parents/guardians, administrators, and community members.
• Responds to conflicts, concerns, and building-level issues and seeks additional administrative support when appropriate.
• Maintains confidentiality and exercises sound professional judgment when handling sensitive student, staff, and family matters.

BUILDING ADMINISTRATION:

• Oversees the daily operation of the school in the absence of the building administrator.
• Supervises students throughout the school day and during school-sponsored activities as assigned.
• Addresses student conduct and administers appropriate disciplinary procedures consistent with District policies and established building practices.
• Responds to student, staff, and parent/guardian concerns and communicates significant issues to the appropriate administrator.
• Supports established school safety, security, emergency, and crisis-response procedures.
• Assists with the supervision of certificated and classified personnel during the assigned substitute period.
• Supports instructional programs and services to ensure continuity of daily school operations.
• Communicates with parents and/or guardians regarding student concerns, behavior, safety, or other matters as appropriate.
• Supports Behavioral Response to Intervention and established student behavior systems and practices.
• Assists with extracurricular activities, assemblies, arrival/dismissal, lunch periods, and other building supervision as needed.
• Supports cultural events and activities as needed.
• Documents and communicates significant incidents, disciplinary actions, safety concerns, and other matters requiring follow-up by the regular building administrator.
• Follows established building procedures and administrative direction provided for the substitute assignment.
• Performs other related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Master’s degree in Education Administration or an appropriately related field.
• Valid Washington State Principal Certificate or other appropriate Washington State administrative credential.
• Successful experience in an educational setting.
• Knowledge of school administration, student supervision, discipline, and school safety procedures.
• Ability to effectively supervise students and staff and respond appropriately to building-level situations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous experience as a principal, assistant principal, or other school administrator.
• Experience working with Native American students, families, and communities.
• Experience working in a tribal school system.
• Knowledge of culturally responsive educational practices.
• Familiarity with Chief Leschi Schools policies, procedures, programs, and school community.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Building Administrator

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this position. Workplace accommodations may be provided in accordance with CLS Tribal policy.

• Employees may be required to sit or stand for extended periods and perform tasks involving reaching, talking, hearing, bending, stooping, twisting, squatting, kneeling, and fine motor coordination.
• This position may require regularly lifting or moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds, with appropriate assistance or equipment as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed in an indoor educational environment with moderate noise levels. Employees may work in and/or proximity to classrooms, students, and standard office or instructional equipment. Conditions may vary based on program needs.
