Job summary

Livermoreschools is seeking an Extended Learning Assistant to develop and implement engaging activities aligned with the ELO-P and district goals, supporting academic and social-emotional development for all students.

Under supervision, you will create hands-on lessons, supervise students, coordinate with staff, prepare materials, and help with attendance, newsletters, snack service, and daily operations.

Qualifications

  • Six (6) months experience in a licensed or exempt preschool facility or school-age program.
  • High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by twelve (12) Early Childhood Education (ECE) core units from an accredited college.
  • Equivalency: a combination of education, training and/or job experience to perform the job functions.

EXTENDED LEARNING ASSISTANT

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the general supervision of the program administrator/supervisor, the Expanded Learning Program Assistant develops, implements, and facilitates lessons and activities aligned with Extended Learning Opportunity Program (ELO-P) and the District’s goals to support the academic success and the social/emotional development of all program students

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Works with the Expanded Learning Site Lead to develop an engaging program that reflects the development needs of all students.

Prepares creative, hands-on interactive lesson plans with short- and long-range curricular goals and objectives that reflect the Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California.

Provides active supervision of students during all programming activities.

Monitors student behavior, ensures compliance with established regulations, and maintains a safe and positive learning environment.

Communicates with school staff which may include the principal, office personnel, maintenance and cafeteria staff, and visitors; conveys and/or receives information required to perform the functions of the job;

Responds to inquiries from staff, parents, and others as assigned.

Distributes instructional and play materials to provide students with necessary items and assist the Expanded Learning Site Lead in the classroom.

Maintains classroom equipment and work areas, including instructional material, cleaning work, and kitchen areas, and ensures the availability of items to provide reliable information related to assigned activities.

Supervises and directly interacts with children warmly, positively, and professionally.

Organizes indoor/outdoor and quiet/active play activities appropriate to age group; actively participates in learning activities with students.

Performs record-keeping and clerical functions, including stocking materials, child check-in/check-out, attendance, and other written reports.

Prepares assigned documents, including newsletters, lesson plans, holiday programs, supply lists, snack menus, and summer calendars to provide written documentation and convey information.

Prepares and serves daily snacks that meet established children’s nutritional needs according to school snack guidance and is aligned to the United State Department of Agriculture Harvest of the Month monthly activities.

Promotes good health and study habits to help support students’ learning outcomes.

Receives and delivers students directly to and from parents or designees following established District procedures and ensuring the safety of children.

Operates various classroom and office equipment, including a copier, media devices, a computer, and assigned software.

Provides support to Expanded Learning Site Lead in assigned activities.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to perform the job functions satisfactorily include operating standard office equipment, using pertinent software applications, and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE of concepts of child growth, development, and behavior characteristics of school-age children; early childhood curriculum areas and appropriate methods for implementation and assessment; methods of instruction; methods of observing, evaluating, and recording child behavior; appropriate codes, policies, regulations, and/or laws; appropriate activities; stages of child development; child guidance principles and practices, including positive reinforcement techniques; policies and objectives of assigned program and activities; health and safety regulations; safe practices in the classroom and outdoor activities; disaster drills and procedures; and basic English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.

ABILITY to oversee and interact with students during recreational, playground, snack time, and other Expanded Learning Program activities; learn policies and objectives of assigned programs and activities; follow established health and safety procedures; determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines; and operate various job-related equipment, including a copier, media devices, a computer, and assigned software. Organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines, timelines, and schedules. Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leads, guides, and/or coordinates others; operates within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE: Job-related experience is preferred. Six (6) months experience in a licensed or exempt preschool facility or school-age program.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by twelve (12) Early Childhood Education (ECE) core units from an accredited college. These may include Introduction to Early Childhood Development, Child Growth and Development, Child, Family, and Community, Introduction to Curriculum

EQUIVALENCY: A combination of education, training, and/or job experience necessary to perform the job's essential functions.

REQUIRED TESTING: Pre-employment Proficiency Test may be required.

CLEARANCES: Meet employment requirements as applicable with state, federal, and local laws and Board Policy.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
