Job summary

Upper Arlington City Schools seeks a Substitute Educational Aide to assist teachers with classroom duties and supervise students throughout the day.

You will monitor student behavior, support learning activities, assist with audio-visual equipment, and help arrange field trips or parent volunteers as needed.

Required: high school diploma or higher and a valid educational aide certificate. Excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork skills are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise playground, cafeteria, classrooms, and bus areas when teachers are not present.
  • Monitor student behavior and refer to appropriate staff as needed.
  • Assist with materials production using copy machines and laminators.
  • Support instructional activities and work with small groups or individuals.
  • Assist with tests, computer use, and data entry of student records.
  • Coordinate with parents, and help arrange field trips and volunteers.

Job description

UPPER ARLINGTON CITY SCHOOLS

Position: Substitute Educational Aide

Salary: $18.01p/hour

Reports to: Classroom teacher, building principal, or other designee

Description: Assists teachers with classroom and other duties

NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance

Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or higher
  • A valid educational aide certificate
  • Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing

  • Organizational and problem solving skills
  • Skills that foster and facilitate learning and classroom management
  • Ability to work in a team environment
Essential Functions:
  • Supervise playground during recess, cafeteria during lunch, classrooms, computer facilities, etc. during periods of time when the teacher is not present, and supervises bus areas when students are arriving and leaving school
  • Monitor student behavior to ensure student actions are consistent with school rules, recommend disciplinary actions, and refer students to the principal or relevant teachers when necessary
  • Resolve minor conflicts between students and refer students to the principal or relevant teachers when necessary
  • Use copy machine to reproduce materials
  • Use laminating equipment and computers to produce materials
  • Assist with audio-visual equipment used for instructional purposes
  • Work with small groups or individual students to help reinforce or enhance skills or to help extend or evaluate learning activities
  • Assist in giving spelling and other types of tests
  • Work with individual students or small groups to help them with projects and other assignments
  • Assist students when using computers for programmed learning activities
  • Hang or arrange displays of student work or educational materials
  • Assist in maintaining records pertaining to students by organizing and entering data
  • Contact parents to schedule appointments and obtain information needed by the teacher
  • Assist in contacting other personnel to schedule spaces or services
  • Help arrange field trips and schedule parent volunteers
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a role model for students
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Additional Working Conditions:
  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue
  • Occasional interaction among unruly children
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 25 pounds, e.g., paper boxes, deliveries of supplies and equipment
  • Frequently move and position self as necessary to access and operate equipment
  • Frequently move around workspace and travel throughout school building and/or school district
  • Employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance, use in the work place throughout his/her employment with the District.
