Note: Onboarding for this Sub Classification has halted until Fall of 2025

Applicants applying to this Substitute posting will be considered for the position of Custodian. This position is established for maintaining clean, attractive, and safe facilities for students, employees, and the public.

Substitute Custodians are needed for both day and night shifts. Day Custodians work 8 hours generally between 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM; Night Custodians work 8 hours generally between 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM.

As a substitute employee, hours are not guaranteed (substitutes can work as little or as much as desired); the position is not benefits-eligible.

All offers of employment are contingent on pre-employment clearances for: Department of Justice (CA) Fingerprints; FBI Fingerprints; Tuberculosis (TB) and Physical. Note: The District pays for pre-employment clearances for substitute employees.

Substitute Custodian Responsibilities:
  1. Assist with distributing items such as supplies, mail, packages, and furniture.
  2. Clean classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, auditoriums, lounges, offices, locker rooms, hallways, and other facilities as assigned; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; empty waste receptacles; spot mop spills; remove gum, debris, and graffiti as needed.
  3. Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities, including sinks, toilets, and urinals; refill dispensers; wash mirrors, tile, walls, and windows; unclog drains and toilets as assigned; replenish classroom supplies.
  4. Communicate with personnel, administrators, and outside contacts to exchange information and resolve issues.
  5. Lock and unlock doors, gates, and windows; turn lights on and off; maintain security; set alarms as appropriate.
  6. Move and arrange furniture and equipment; perform minor maintenance and repairs; prepare facilities for events; set up and clean up after events.
  7. Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, tools, buffer/scrubber machines, and carpet cleaners; drive vehicles for work as assigned; maintain equipment; assist with supply management.
  8. Participate in thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacations.
  9. Perform routine custodial activities: sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, polishing floors; vacuuming; spot cleaning carpets.
  10. Pick up debris from grounds and adjacent areas; sweep concrete surfaces.
  11. Replace light bulbs and tubes; clean chalkboards, whiteboards, trays, and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners; clean tables, chairs, and floors.
  12. Report safety, sanitary, fire hazards, and maintenance needs; respond to health and safety concerns.
Qualifications:

Custodian: Any combination equivalent to six months of custodial experience.

Knowledge of:
  • Methods, equipment, and materials used in grounds maintenance.
  • Safety practices and procedures.
  • Basic hand tools for minor repairs.
  • Methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in modern custodial work.
Abilities to:
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Observe and report hazards and maintenance needs.
  • Follow health and safety regulations.
  • Operate maintenance equipment.
  • Use cleaning materials safely and efficiently.
  • Understand written procedures, write routine documents, and communicate clearly.
