Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Operate a school bus on designated routes to pick up and drop off students.
  • Provide safe and efficient transportation for District students to events and field trips.
  • Perform daily inspections and basic maintenance of the vehicle.
  • Assist loading and unloading of handicapped students as necessary.
  • Keep accurate route records and daily reports.
  • Maintain a clean interior and exterior of the bus.
  • Model appropriate behavior and discipline on the bus.

Job description

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and one year experience in the operation of a motor vehicle.

Valid Kentucky Commercial Class B driver's license, including passenger endorsement; School Bus Certificate; must pass driving record check.

JOB FUNCTION: To operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students; provide safe and efficient transportation for District students to and from school, special events and field trips; perform daily inspections and operator maintenance of vehicle; assist in the loading and unloading of physically and mentally handicapped students, as necessary.

DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Responsible for the safe and timely transportation of school children
  • Responsible for controlling the behavior of students while riding bus
  • Keep accurate route records, student pick-up lists, damage reports, daily reports including fuel vouchers, student conduct reports, and special trip vouchers
  • Report any student misconduct to principals
  • Keep headlights, stop lights, turn signals, bus windshield, rear glass, and door glass clean and free from obstructions
  • Report any bus malfunctions to the school vehicle mechanic
  • Perform minor bus maintenance or repairs if the need arises
  • Administer minor first aid to student if needed
  • Perform daily checks on bus condition and prepare records
  • Maintain a good record of meeting time schedule
  • Drive properly and safely at all times; obeying laws and other regulations
  • Responsible for keeping the interior and exterior of bus clean and free from debris
  • Project a good role model for students in both physical appearance and moral character
  • Report to the superintendent or his designee in timely fashion when unable to drive bus

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Safe driving practices
  • Provisions of the State Motor Vehicle code and Kentucky Administration Regulations applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students
  • First aid practices
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy

ABILITY TO:

  • Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students
  • Maintain order and discipline among students while driving a school bus
  • Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition
  • Recognize equipment malfunction and take appropriate action
  • Learn designated bus routes including stops and traffic hazards
  • Maintain routine records
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Meet schedules and time lines
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Learn, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices
  • Assist in loading and unloading handicapped children, as necessary

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Complete all mandatory training and attend in-service sessions
  • Performs assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Consistently displays self-control with parents, students and school personnel
  • Maintains a clean workstation (desk, office, etc.)
  • Be clean, neat and appropriately/professionally dressed
  • Maintains student control
  • Operate equipment in a safe manner
  • Be consistently responsible-maintaining regular punctual attendance and timely completion of assigned duties, working assigned contract and extended days and using sick and personal leave appropriately
