Job summary

Valley Unified Regional Service Center is seeking a Substitute Bus Driver to ensure the safe transportation of students. The ideal candidate must comply with traffic laws, supervise students during transit, and maintain a clean and safe bus environment.

Job description

Substitute Bus Driver
Position Function

Under direction of Director of Transportation and Facilities, provide sae and efficient transportation for students, teachers, and others.

Bus Driver Essential Functions
  • Obeys all traffic laws.
  • Observes all rules and safety regulations for the safe operation of school buses and is a defensive driver.
  • Is a courteous driver and allows traffic to pass the bus whenever it is safe to do so.
  • Checks the bus before each operation for mechanical or electrical defects and notifies the transportation supervisor of any maintenance problem.
  • Enforces all rules and regulations and maintains discipline by following the established disciplinary procedure.
  • Keeps to the assigned schedule whenever possible while making sure all speed limits and regulations are strictly followed.
  • Exercises responsible leadership.
  • Assists in supervising students throughout trips and remains with students both on and off the bus.
  • Reports all accidents and completes all required reports within established time limits.
  • Keeps the assigned bus clean by sweeping it daily and washing the interior and exterior as required.
  • Follows all established safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Covers other bus runs as assigned and works as a team member.
  • Shows proficiency in handling and maneuvering school busses.
  • Interacts pleasantly with the public, students, and staff, and provides assistance as indicated.
  • Performs such other tasks as may be assigned by the Principal and head mechanic.

Mental Demands

Involves ability to follow directions and established procedures. Requires ability to assist in maintaining discipline and order on all bus trips in order to create a safe environment. Also requires ability to react quickly and confidently in emergency situations. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public, students, and other workers.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit while driving and occasionally required to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while driving. The employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm and finger motion many times. Use of legs and feet is required to apply constant pressure to gas and brake pedals as well as occasional pressure to clutch. This position requires lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling medium to heavy loads. Stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and climbing are also required in situations where lifting and pulling may or may not be required. Ability to reach above head or below waist is also required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision. Employee must be able to pull 50 lbs to open bus hood on a daily basis and to perform emergency evacuations as needed.

Environmental Conditions

Most work is performed driving a school bus but occasional outside work is required. There is exposure to a variety of chemical including but not limited to gasoline, diesel, vapors, cleaning agents, exhaust, oils, lubricants and smoke. The employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees F and below 32 degrees F and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.

Qualifications Profile

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • High School or Vocational School Diploma or completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Holds a valid State of Maine Bus Driver's License and meets all state laws and regulations regarding licensure.
  • Maine CDL Bus Operator's license.
  • Maine Criminal History Records Check is required.
