Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Ohio Department of Education Educational Aide Permit required. Educational Aid Permit with ESEA endorsement preferred.
  • Behavioral management skills substantiated by training and work experience. Duties may require agility, physical strength, and stamina to address the needs of students with problem behavior and/or students requiring physical assistance (e.g., mobility, transferring, positioning, etc.)
  • Good Communication Skills
  • High School Diploma
  • Ability to Learn and Perform the Responsibilities of the Position
  • Some Computer Skills
  • First Aid Certification and CPR Training (Or Willingness to Attain)
  • Maintains a record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.

REPORTS TO: Assigned Administrator/Supervisor

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs duties that facilitate the effective delivery of program services. Works effectively with limited supervision. Performs tasks efficiently to meet deadlines. Performs support services that may include student assistance with daily living activities, behavior management, instructional support, social skills training, task redirection, etc.
  • Note: Performance of functions described in this document may vary in scope frequency and duration. Some duties may not be required for individual assignments. Duties designated at the time of hire may be modified to address current, altered, or emerging program/staffing needs.
Regular Education Classroom Aide
  • Meet with each assigned student on a regularly scheduled basis for the purpose of providing instruction.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Prepare for students assigned and show written evidence of preparations.
  • Monitor academic progress of assigned students.
  • Provide assistance to teacher on an as needed basis, in preparation of instructional materials, monitoring student assignments and supervising students as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with members of the staff and supervisory personnel.
  • Work to establish and maintain open, positive lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavior progress of assigned students.
  • Maintain all time records in accordance with forms and procedures established by the administration of the Fairfield Union Schools.
  • Other duties as assigned by the building Principal.
Special Education Classroom Aide
  • Assist the teacher with the daily preparation, care, and organization of equipment and materials for classroom instruction.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in the implementation of each child’s individual education plan to develop gross motor, fine motor, cognitive, academic, language, speech, self‑help, auditory, personal/social skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all student files and family concerns.
  • Promote a positive image of the students and the program to other staff and students.
  • If necessary, attend to the children’s bathroom and eating needs.
  • Maintain a calm attitude and sense of control.
  • Support the teacher in all decisions regarding students and/or mainstreaming.
  • Assist the children in non‑classroom locations, such as the cafeteria.
  • Assist the teacher with record keeping tasks.
  • Assist individuals or small groups of students in the classroom under the direction of the teacher.
  • Provide appropriate motivation and reinforcement with the children.
  • Provide behavioral control of students and monitor instructional activities during temporary absence of the teacher.
  • Attend parent and staff meetings as requested by the teacher or supervisor.
  • Attend professional growth training sessions as needed.
  • Assist and/or observe students in mainstream classes, as needed.
  • Assist mainstream teachers who work with DH students, as needed.
  • Comply with policies and procedures adopted by the Fairfield Union Local School District.
  • Maintain professional standards of dress, conduct, confidentiality, and parent/staff interactions.
  • Other school related duties at the request of the classroom teacher, coordinator, and the building Principal.
  • Become trained to serve the medical needs of students that are a part of the school’s responsibility.
Library Aide
  • Shelve books according to Dewey Decimal System.
  • Maintain and enter new materials into the computerized catalog.
  • Teach library skills and library computer skills to students as assigned.
  • Hold story time for classes as assigned.
  • Maintain order in library.
  • Supervise students in library use.
  • Laminate instructional materials as needed.
  • Assist in or conduct yearly inventory.
  • Maintain records such as circulation records, shelf lists, collection statistics, etc.
  • Maintain daily attendance records.
  • Maintain circulation of books and periodicals.
  • Order new materials and periodicals based on student and classroom needs.
  • Administer Accelerated Reader quizzes and maintain student records.
  • Assist in acquiring AR quizzes and books for that collection.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by building principal or librarian.
Elementary Health Services Aide
  • Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with district nurse(s) and the building principal concerning health related issues.
  • Coordinate the administration of medications, including storage, dispensing, record keeping, and reminding parents when replenishment is necessary.
  • Establish/Maintain health files for students.
  • Assist students as they come into the clinic by following Board of Education approved policies for the treatment of illness or injury.
  • Assist diabetic students with insulin needs. Monitor daily blood sugar levels. Maintain appropriate insulin and blood sugar logs.
  • Work with individual students to manage daily health care needs so they can attend school. Assist students with maintaining acceptable blood sugar levels, maintaining appropriate air flow (asthma attacks), catheterization, tube feedings, suctioning, etc.
  • Contact parents or caretakers in the event a student needs to go home due to illness or injury. Initiate completion of a student accident report when appropriate. Call school nurse(s) if an accident report is initiated or squad is called.
  • Notify district nurse(s) concerning student health issues of a chronic or serious nature.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all records.
  • Assist district nurse(s) in organizing and filing the Emergency Medical Authorization forms. Assist teachers with EMA forms for field trips.
  • Prepare first aid kit, appropriate student medications, EMA forms for field trips.
  • Assist nurse(s) with routine health screenings.
  • Assist nurse(s) with recording immunizations and health records.
  • Participate in on-going health related inservice training programs as they become available.
  • Perform minimally intrusive medical procedures as directed by school nurse(s); some of the procedures may include tracheotomy/stoma care, catheterization, rectal suppositories, tube feedings, certain injections, and other such procedures to treat medically fragile children, as the advance of technology introduces additional procedures.
  • Other duties as needed.
Middle School and High School Health Services Aide

  • Assist bathroom needs of assigned students, including diapering, undressing, dressing, training, etc.
  • Aspirate a child’s tracheotomy using the Aspirator provided in the classroom.
  • Assist students in the cafeteria, playground and in other in‑school, non‑classroom locations.
  • Monitor daily classroom behaviors and assist teacher with behavioral and instructional programs.
  • Assist student with catheterization needs.
  • Provide other medical services as required and with training.
  • Other school related duties with the child at the request of the classroom teacher and the building Principal.
Transportation Attendant
  • Ride the school bus with students who attend certain special education programs.
  • Provide for the needs of special education students while on the bus.
  • Assist students on and off the bus as needed.
  • Care for the first‑aid needs of students.
  • Supervise students with behavioral problems.

Study Hall or Detention Monitor
  • Determine seat assignments and take attendance.
  • Ensure that students have books and classroom assignments.
  • Help students with questions.
  • Authenticate student permission to leave the room. Track the location of each assigned student.
  • Control student access to lockers, toilet rooms, etc. Prohibit loitering near the room entrance.
Skills and Abilities Required
  • Physical ability to supervise students of various ages and activity levels.

  • Effectively uses listening, observation, reading, verbal, nonverbal, and writing skills.

Work Duties/Environment may involve
  • Swift movement, lifting, carrying, and moving work‑related supplies/equipment.

  • Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, bodily fluids, blood, and communicable diseases.
  • Occasional interaction with aggressive, disruptive, and/or unruly individuals.
  • Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, stoop, crouch, and kneel.
