Job summary

Sylvania is seeking a dependable school bus driver to transport students along designated routes and on district-approved trips. You will monitor student behavior, enforce safety rules, and perform daily checks to ensure the bus is mechanically sound.

The role requires a valid CDL or driver's license, an excellent driving record, and CPR/First Aid certification. Previous commercial driving experience and a willingness to work outdoors are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Two years of driving experience with an excellent driving record.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Valid driver’s license or CDL as required by law.
  • Must submit to a driving abstract being pulled.
  • Experience as a driver of a truck or vehicle with endorsements or three years driving passenger vehicles.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Position represented by PSE Bargaining Union.

Responsibilities

  • Drives a school bus along an assigned route and ensures students exit at the proper stop.
  • Observes traffic, enforces safety rules, and reports hazards to supervisor.
  • Conducts daily pre- and post-trip inspections of bus systems and safety equipment.
  • Cleans bus interior and operates safety equipment as required.
  • Communicates with supervisor about mechanical issues and schedule adjustments.
  • Transports students to district activities and enforces discipline as needed.
  • Transports special needs students using lift equipment and secures wheelchairs.
  • Maintains records and completes reports as required.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY

This position drives a school bus or other district vehicle to transport students to and from school along designated routes, and/or on trips to district approved activities. The position monitors behavior and disciplines students while they are on the bus, and performs daily checks to ensure that the bus is in safe operating condition.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Drives a school bus; picks up and drops off students along an assigned route at designated stops. Follows time schedule. Maintains listings of students on route; ensures that students exit bus at proper stop.

  1. Observes traffic and remains alert to potential dangers; monitors road conditions to ensure that bus can be operated safely. Obeys traffic laws; provides input to supervisor concerning potential hazards along route.
  2. Establishes rapport with student passengers. Monitors student behavior and enforces safety rules; disciplines students as necessary. Reports recurring or major discipline problems to Transportation Supervisor for action.
  3. Conducts daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections; checks tire inflation and condition; checks fuel, oil and fluid levels; ensures proper operation of lights, horn and emergency exits. Secures bus at end of run.
  4. Picks up litter in bus and cleans windows; periodically washes bus. Operates school bus equipment and accessories, such as fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, tire chains, and sanders. Maintains first aid kit; performs basic first aid as appropriate.
  5. Communicates with supervisor concerning mechanical malfunctions, potential vehicle safety hazards, schedules, etc.; provides input for improvements in service. Keeps supervisor informed of unusual situations or problems.
  6. Transports students to district-approved extracurricular activities, field trips and other activity trips as assigned, enforces discipline rules; accounts for students and ensures that time schedules are met.
  7. Transports special need students as assigned, including physically handicapped students. Operates lift equipment to load wheelchairs; secures students in seats and/or wheelchairs. Monitors special health conditions; calls for emergency assistance as required.
  8. Maintains records; completes forms and prepares reports as required by state or school district policies. Successfully completes school bus driver training programs and course established by the State or school district
  9. Performs related duties as assigned.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to Transportation Supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS

1.Requires visual concentration and dexterity.

2.Required to sit for prolonged periods, meet deadlines, and work outdoors in inclement weather.

3. Requires constant safety awareness.

4. Typically works a split shift.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation or equivalent and two years of driving experience with an excellent driving record.

Be at least twenty-one years of age.

Have a valid driver’s license or commercial driver’s license, as required by law.

Must submit to a drving abstract being pulled

Have at least one year of experience as a driver of a truck or commercial vehicle requiring a special endorsement or, in the alternative, at least three years of experience as a driver of a passenger vehicle.

Hold a current and valid first-aid, CPR card.
