Position Summary

Substation Technician -B is a non‑exempt position in the construction, maintenance and repair of substation equipment/systems. The role requires 4‑6 years of continuous working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring. Work includes confined spaces and elevated work areas, and involves various pieces of construction equipment specific to the trade. The technician may work independently or with others, occasionally long hours during emergency conditions, coach subordinates on the crew, work at various locations, and may be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands.

Essential Functions

• Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting of substation equipment/systems.
• Concrete Foundations, ground grids, and steel erection
• Buswork (High and Low Voltage)
• Airbreak / Hookstick Switches
• Control Cable
• Terminations (High / Low Voltage)
• Control Buildings
• Conduit and duck banks
• Capacitor bank installations 23 kv–230 kv
• Transformers, regulators and circuit breakers
• Circuit Switchers, motor‑operated and manual switches
• Maintain company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working condition.
• Frequently work with energized high‑voltage systems, requiring skill and care to protect lives.

Minimum Requirements

• Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
• Capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet.
• Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License.
• Must supply own personal hand tools required for the work.
• Must supply own safety toed work boots.
• Capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
• Capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
• Must be able to work independently or with others.
• Operational experience with various heavy equipment:
  • Bucket, derrick and boom trucks
  • Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders
  • Articulating man‑lifts
  • Pressure diggers
  • Trenchers
  • Track crawler loader/backhoe
  • Rough terrain telescopic forklifts
• Willing to work overtime or long hours during emergencies or as requested; schedules can change frequently with short notice.
• 90% travel required.
• Capable of following company safety rules and policies.
• Knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
• Capable of working in close proximity to energized substation equipment.
• Capable of interpreting substation structural drawings (elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, foundation plans) and communicating with customers and subordinates.
• Accurately appraise technical situations.
• Coach subordinates on the crew.
• Develop and interpret material lists.
• Trace phasing in a substation and verify against three‑line diagrams.
• Retain knowledge of all aspects of substation systems.
• Establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable troughs in new and existing stations.
• Grade and finish concrete slabs and foundations.
• Perform routine carpentry work on building wood concrete forms to meet size and shape of concrete to be placed.
• Willing to work overtime outside of the normal schedule, including weekends, holidays, and when required.

Work Environment
