Job summary

The Tri-M Group, LLC is hiring a skilled Substation Electrician to perform installation, testing and maintenance of electrical power equipment and to lead a crew in substations. You will ensure safety, follow procedures, and coordinate work across multiple sites.

Applicants should have 4+ years in substation work, NEC/NESC knowledge, and a valid driver’s license. Travel nationwide and overtime may be required; comprehensive benefits are provided.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent or post secondary technical training.
• Minimum of four (4) years of experience in the substation construction and/or related technical field.
• Completion of basic training in fall protection, confined space, LO/TO classes.
• Understanding of construction standards and procedures for primary and secondary installations.
• Current First Aid and CPR cards.
• Willingness to be trained and educated on testing and service techniques, protocols, equipment and technical issues.
• Knowledge of NEC, NESC, ANSI/IEEE standards.
• Self-motivated with good attention to detail and safety oriented.
• Must be able to work long hours and overtime during emergencies (holidays, weekends).
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Ability and willingness to travel nationally to jobsites with overnight stays.
• Must have reliable personal transportation to and from assigned work location/office.

Summary Description

Under the direction of the Manager or Superintendent, this person will perform various installation, testing and maintenance of electrical power equipment and also perform various service tasks to the same equipment.

Essential Functions:

• Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M safety policies and procedures.
• Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M employment policies and procedures including standards of conduct and appearance to reflect positively on the Company.
• Understands and follows proper safety and temporary grounding procedures.
• Responsible for the installation, modification, commissioning and/or maintenance of all electrical power equipment in substations.
• Responsible for directing, coordinating, training and monitoring others in all types of construction and maintenance of electrical power equipment in substations.
• Completes work order assignments, interprets prints, and prepares daily time sheets, material tickets, field test reports, and all associated compliance documentation as required.
• Leads and directs the work of the crew for the execution of assigned jobs, and plans and lays out the specific work assignments on the job.
• Responsible for appraising condition of the substation equipment, such as transformers, switchgear, switchboards, associated electrical control systems, wiring, busses, and related equipment.
• Adheres to testing and service protocols, including Tri-M procedures, forms, and check sheets, as well as customer requirements, ANSI/IEEE, NETA procedures and OEM requirements.
• Ensures that quality and productivity meet Company and customer standards.
• Travels regionally to job sites as needed.
• Serves as part of an emergency response crew.
• Safeguards and maintains Tri‑M equipment and tools.
• Can read and understand electrical distribution system drawings, including single lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, section and plans views.

Physical Requirements:

• Working 40 hours/week, scheduled in 8 to 10 hour shifts.
• Standing and climbing 4 to 6 hours/day.
• Kneeling, lifting, reaching above shoulders, and bending 4 to 5 hours/day.
• Twisting (180° ) and walking 2 to 3 hours/day.
• Squatting and sitting 1 to 2 hours/day.
• Lifting weights of 0 to 75 lbs. at the following frequencies: continuous lifting of 10 to 35 lbs.; frequent lifting of 35 to 50 lbs.; occasional lifting of 50 to 75 lbs.; sizes & shapes of objects vary from concrete blocks to cylinders to 10’ lengths of metallic conduit and 20' lengths of PVC conduit; average carry requirements, 60 lbs. for 40'.
• Ability to lift from floor to above shoulder.
• Repetitive use of hands includes: continuous grasping up to 50 lbs.; frequent pushing and pulling of 50 to 75 lbs.; and fine motor coordination for equipment adjustments and test set use.
• Repetitive use of feet is required for operating heavy equipment, conduit benders and vertical climbing.
• Vision adequate for blueprint reading and color coding for wire identification.
• Balance adequate for continuous climbing of ladders, scaffolds, and lifts.
• Environmental factors include working in: temperature extremes of 0° F to 100° F; up to 8 hours inside or outside; atmospheric exposure to dust, gases, fumes, and odors within the Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL).
• Special hazards include exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and potentially explosive hazards.
• Personal protective equipment includes use of hard hat, safety glasses, protected-toe boots, and appropriate gloves for the task. Equipment on an 'as needed' basis may include fall protection, dust mask, respirator, hearing protection, arc flash protective gear, and dielectrically insulated gloves and/or sleeves.
