Job summary

HDR is seeking a Substation Project Engineer to join a growing Power Delivery team. You will help design substations, develop protection and control schemes, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineers to deliver projects on time and within budget.

The role emphasizes independent work, mentorship of junior staff, and QA/QC oversight, with a focus on high voltage substation design within a national engineering firm.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required; PE license preferred or required.
  • Foundational expertise in high voltage substation design, physical and protection & controls.
  • 3+ years of project execution experience in Power Delivery or Substation sectors.
  • Experience with an engineering consulting firm is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare scopes, schedules, and budgets and ensure adherence.
  • Develop and deliver physical substation designs (yard layouts, plans, sections, grounding, protection).
  • Develop protection and control designs (panels, one lines, three lines, wiring).
  • Prepare electrical calculations for grounding and lighting protection studies.
  • Prepare equipment specs for procurement and testing.
  • Coordinate design activities with Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission teams.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers and perform QA/QC reviews.

HDR is looking for a Substation Project Engineer to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals.

In the role of Substation Project Engineer, we'll count on you to:

  • Support preparing scopes, schedules, and budgets, and ensure that schedules and budgets are met
  • Understanding, developing, and delivering physical substation designs including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material
  • Understanding, developing, and delivering protection and control designs including panel arrangements, one lines/single lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, equipment wiring and relay panel wiring
  • Prepare electrical calculations for studies and reports (grounding, lighting protection, AC/DC load studies, etc.)
  • Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and/or factory acceptance testing
  • Coordinate design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, etc.)
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate project activities with manager, clients, and others as needed
  • Works independently and may direct, mentor, train, and/or supervise efforts of less-experienced EIT's and/or Designers.
  • Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Engineers, Project Coordinators or Designers, or BIM Technicians as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’sdegree in Electrical Engineering
  • Foundational expertise in high voltage substation design, including both physical and protection & controls design
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in project execution within the Power Delivery, Substation Sector
  • Previous experience with an engineering consulting firm
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license
  • Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software. (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit)
