Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a two degree in Engineering Technology or related field.
  • Graduation date must be after August 2027.
  • Must have a valid State Driver's License and the ability to obtain a CDL Class A Driver's License

Responsibilities

  • Assist a higher-level technician in transmission line/substation construction and maintenance.
  • Learn how the power grid operates.
  • Adhere to safety rules and company safety practices.
  • Read electrical drawings and schematics for substations and power systems.
  • Demonstrate basic electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Develop methodical thinking to organize activities logically.
  • Understand pneumatics and hydraulics basics.
  • Gain exposure to Transmission and Distribution system switching activities.
  • Develop basic understanding of AC and DC principles.
  • Operate bucket, digger derrick truck and other aerial devices as needed.
  • Understand Power Grid Operations construction and maintenance standards.

Potential opportunities at locations across our footprint in North Carolina/South Carolina.

A Substation or Line Technician Summer Intern will assist a higher-level technician in activities associated with transmission line/substation construction and maintenance and learn how our power grid operates.

Transmission systems and components deliver high voltage electricity from generation facilities (power plants, wind, solar, etc.) to the customer distribution system (lines/substations that feed homes and businesses). Interns will work directly with experienced technicians to assist them with and learn more about the construction and maintenance activities required to keep our grid reliable and to safely meet customer needs.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Clearly understand the importance of company safe work practices and safety rules
  • Basic understanding of the Human Performance Tools and requirements
  • Basic understanding of the isolation of substation and line equipment and grounding practices
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communications skills
  • Basic understanding of electrical drawings (substation equipment schematics and power system drawings)
  • Basic understanding of NERC compliance and the importance for accurate data and timely completion of assigned work
  • Basic electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills
  • Develops the ability to think methodically and arrange activities in logical order
  • Basic understanding of pneumatics and hydraulics systems
  • Exposure to Transmission and Distribution system switching activities
  • Develop a basic understanding of AC and DC basic principles

Basic/ Required Qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location. Reliable, consistent transportation is required to ensure timely arrival at the applicable facility.
  • Demonstrated availability for after- hour's work
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment with individuals from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
  • Must be capable of working on elevated work surfaces
  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.
  • Ability to pass required testing to be eligible for interview
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check and drug screening
  • Ability/willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions
