Job summary

EDM International, Inc. is seeking a Substation Inspector/Observer to supervise contractor work on substations, perform daily on-site inspections, and verify compliance with drawings and project specifications.

The role requires extensive field experience with substation foundations, testing, and documentation. Candidates should have strong communication skills, familiarity with Procore, and the ability to work in varying field conditions in Colorado.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of working knowledge of substation facilities and foundations.
  • Experience in substation construction and inspection preferred; journeyman lineman background desired.
  • Proficiency with project management tools and basic web tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Observe testing requirements for drilled piers, slabs, foundations, access roads, ground grid, and substation wiring.
  • Communicate professionally with contractors with clear, timely updates.
  • Create and maintain daily inspection reports documenting findings.
  • Review discrepancies with relevant parties and update drawings and permits as needed.

Substation Inspector/Observer

Salary Range:$50.00- $65.00 per hour

Summary/Objective:

The Substation Inspector/Observer role is responsible for overseeing construction of contracted
projects. The inspector will perform daily on-site inspections to verify the work is being completed in
strict accordance with drawings and specifications of approved project documents.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Properly observe testing requirements for drilled pier foundations, slab on grade, monolithic
    foundations, access roads, yard rock, installation of ground grid, substation steel, and wiring.
  • Interact professionally with Contractors by providing clear, accurate, and timely
    communications.
  • Create and maintain daily detailed inspection reports
  • Review any discrepancies with the appropriate parties
  • Maintain all contract documents, necessary permits, and updated drawings
  • Ensure a safety-conscious work environment, and initiate corrective action as necessary
Qualifications/Experience:
  • Five years minimum working knowledge of Substation facilities and foundations
  • Previous substation construction and inspection experience preferred
  • Journeyman Lineman experience preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of construction principles and techniques, including construction
    specifications, drawings and conformance requirements.
  • Proficient in Project Management applications (e.g., Procore).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and able to perform basic web-based tasks
  • Basic understanding of field mobile applications (e.g., ArcGIS, Field Maps, etc.) preferred.
  • Possess and maintain any necessary certificates
  • FHWA – NHI – 132070 (Drilled Shaft Inspector’s Qualification), helpful but not required
  • ACI Concrete Field-Testing Grade I Certification or Higher, helpful but not required

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
  • This is a project specific non-exempt/hourly position. The hours will fluctuate.
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
  • Work Environment: This job operates in indoor and outdoor field environments including routine
    use of a vehicle and walking field assessments of utility infrastructure and can include work in
    remote locations as well as urban/city environments. Vehicle use may include stepping in and
    out of a full size 4x4 pickup truck several times a day for long durations and/or frequent stops and
    ability to work/drive safely in potentially harsh weather conditions.
  • Physical Demands: The employee must have sufficient physical ability and mobility to travel and
    work in a field environment. This includes walking/hiking three or more miles a day on various
    surfaces including flat, dry, wet, slippery, uneven, rough, steep terrain, hills, and slopes, standing,
    sitting, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, twisting, grasping and making repetitive
    hand movement in the performance of daily duties. This position can include exposure to noise,
    dust, grease, and all types of weather and temperature conditions, exposure to hazardous traffic
    conditions, carrying, pushing and/or pulling light to moderate weights up to 50 pounds as well as
    operating assigned equipment and vehicles. Employee must have the ability to verbally
    communicate to convey and exchange information and the ability to see and hear in normal range
    with or without correction.
