Position Overview
HDR is seeking a national Substation EPC Project Engineering Lead within our Power Delivery Practice to lead substation EPC initiatives across the United States. The role focuses on technical bid development, estimating, and transition of projects from pursuit to execution, ensuring collaborative delivery with construction partners.
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as the Pursuit Champion/Manager on Substation EPC projects and transition management duties to the Project Manager after award.
- Collaborate with construction partners and HDR technical leads to define technical risk analysis, mitigation, layout, design, and bill‑of‑materials support.
- Lead scope, schedule, and budget development, addressing procurement support, construction support, and critical path scheduling; coordinate with land survey, geotechnical, transmission line, environmental, real estate, and GIS staff.
- Estimate technical investments prior to Go/No‑Go discussions and share risk evaluations with commercial, business development, and operations leaders.
- Interface with construction contractors and HDR subconsultants during pursuit and project, driving risk identification and mitigation conversations.
- Assist in Go/No‑Go discussions, project risk assessments, SOQs, proposals, interviews, and negotiations as required.
- Help build front‑end engineering and design (FEED) teams as the AD program expands.
- Serve in technical leadership roles including engineering manager, discipline lead, or technical advisor, while leading proposal development and standing‑up project teams.
- Develop templates, standards, specifications, drawings, processes, and procedures to support Substation EPC pursuits and projects; maintain a database and provide best‑practice guidance.
- Mentor and lead project managers, engineering managers, and discipline‑specific practitioners.
- Perform other duties as needed.
- Report to the Alternative Delivery Director.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering.
- Professional Engineering License.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Minimum 10 years of substation design experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience building and leading engineering teams on EPC projects.
- Proficient in CDEGS, BIM Software (Autodesk, Revit, Bentley).
- Minimum 3 years of experience developing engineering scope, schedule, and budget estimates on EPC projects.
- Experience developing EPC design and construction packages.
- Comprehensive understanding of oneline and general arrangement drawings, equipment selection, and value‑engineering solutions for substation projects up to 500 kV.
- Experience optimizing substation designs with site layouts, foundations, automation, and coordination with discipline‑specific SMEs.
- Strong leadership, engineering management, and communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and conferencing platforms.
- Position requires up to 20 % travel.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a professional, architectural, engineering, or closely related field.
- 10+ years of experience in the related field.
- Professional or engineering registration and relevant technical experience.
- Experience in developing and managing diverse teams.
- Cooperative collaboration with business‑class regional directors, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers.

Compensation
Targeted salary range: $160,090 – $228,700 based on experience, education, and location.
Primary Location
Omaha, Nebraska.
Hours and Status
Full‑time, Regular employee. Business class: Substation Engineering.
