The role oversees design deliverables, budgets, schedules, and staffing, ensuring code compliance and technical excellence while supporting business development through proposals and client presentations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
• 10+ years in substation engineering and design, incl. 3+ years in supervision.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar design tools.
• Strong communication and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the substation engineering design team (electrical P&C and Physical design).
• Monitor project schedules and budgets to meet department goals.
• Manage staffing, recruiting and performance evaluations.
• Conduct design reviews and correct engineering documents and BOMs.
• Provide technical guidance to the design team on substation projects.
• Coordinate with PM, clients, utilities, sub-contractors and construction teams.
• Support proposals, scope development and client presentations.
• Promote safety culture and adherence to IEEE, NESC, NEC.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Overview

The Substation Engineering Manager will lead a multidisciplinary engineering team in delivering high-quality substation design and engineering services. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing project design deliverables, budgets, schedules, and resource allocation for substation projects supporting one of Southern California's largest electric utility clients and will report directly to the Substation Department Manager.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the substation engineering design team, including electrical P&C and Physical design engineers.
• Monitor project schedules and budgets, ensuring department performance goals are met.
• Manage resource allocation, staffing, recruiting, and performance evaluations.
• Conduct design reviews, implement corrective actions of engineering documents including design drawings and bills of materials.
• Provide technical guidance to engineering design team for substation projects.
• Coordinate with project management, clients, utilities, sub-contractors, and construction teams to align project goals and ensure technical accuracy.
• Support business development efforts by contributing to proposals, scope development, and client presentations.
• Promote a strong safety culture and adherence to industry codes (e.g., IEEE, NESC, NEC).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
• 10+ years of experience in substation engineering and design, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
• Strong knowledge of substation systems 4kV to 500 kV, protection and control, grounding, and physical design.
• Experience managing multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Experience performing quality reviews of substation engineering drawing packages.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar design tools.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Preferred

• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
• Experience with Southern California utility clients and understanding of their engineering standards.
• Familiarity with FERC/NERC requirements and other regulatory guidelines.
• PMP Certification or formal project management training.

Wage Data Per State Requirements

The Salary range for this position is $180,000 - $220,000. The starting salary will be commensurate with skill, education, experience, and working environment.
