Job summary

Actalent seeks a Substation Engineer to join the substation department working with utility customers. You will coordinate with in-house and client engineers, provide training, and lead substation projects from scope through completion.

The role involves developing scopes, reviewing drawings for compliance, and ensuring timely delivery of materials and updates to project documentation. Occasional site visits are required.

Qualifications

  • Two to eight years of utilities experience with substations.
  • PE License is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Master’s Degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering will count toward years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop project scopes, one line diagrams, and estimates for substation projects.
  • Review substation construction drawings for compliance with codes and standards.
  • Engineer and design lightning protection and grounding for substations.
  • Make changes to drawings and documentation to reflect project needs.
  • Lead, facilitate, and coordinate work activities to complete substation projects.
  • Provide training and guidance to lower level employees.
  • Travel to project sites for walk downs and information gathering.

Job description

The position falls within the substation department of the organization. The engineer will working to complete projects that support our utility customer. They will work with in-house and client engineers and designers. They will provide, coordinate, and conduct training to lower level engineers.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop project scopes, one line diagrams, and estimates for substation projects
  • Review substation construction drawings such as electrical arrangements, plan and section views, grounding, cable and conduit drawings, and other project documents and verify compliance with appropriate codes and standards
  • Engineer and design lightning protection, grounding, and equipment replacement and repair for substations
  • Make necessary changes and corrections to drawings and documentation
  • Verify the proper use of equipment and material according to project documentation standards and codes
  • Verify that material and equipment are ordered and delivered on time for substation construction
  • Travel to project sites for walk downs and gathering information to develop the correct requirements for the projects to scope and develop substations
  • Function as a project lead for substation projects
  • Perform all engineering and design activities with minimum direction
  • Lead, facilitate, and coordinate work activities of others within the work group, team, department, or those external to complete substation projects
  • Provide training and guidance to lower level employees
  • Identify and initiate corrective action when substation project objectives are not being met
  • Interpret codes and regulations and develop standards for construction projects
  • Promote engineering professionalism and standards
  • Participate in development of plans by establishing goals, objectives, and requirements
  • Work under supervision of higher level engineers
  • Position will require occasional site visits

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Two to eight years of experience in utilities working with substations
  • A PE License is required
  • Two to eight years of experience completing engineering projects from start to finish
  • Two to eight years of experience scoping, estimating, and ordering materials for substations Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering from an accredited institution Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering from an accredited institution will count toward years of experience
