Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Produce standard substation design packages, including one-line and three-line diagrams, layouts, grounding, raceway/cable designs, and equipment specifications.
  • Perform engineering calculations, including equipment ratings, thermal and clearance calculations, grounding grid sizing, and short-circuit inputs, with peer review.
  • Coordinate with Civil/Structural and Protection & Control teams to integrate designs and eliminate clashes.
  • Prepare and review equipment specifications and support bid evaluations and submittal reviews.
  • Provide construction support by responding to RFIs, addressing field changes, reviewing redlines, and updating as-built documentation.
  • Support commissioning readiness through punch lists, pre-energization checks, and turnover documentation.
  • Maintain design records to support compliance evidence and future maintenance needs.
  • Identify design improvements and recommend updates to standards and templates.
  • Mentor Engineer 1 staff on drafting standards and calculation fundamentals.
  • Contribute to long-lead material lists and equipment forecasts.
  • Participate in lessons-learned activities and incorporate improvements into future designs.
  • Support IT/OT integration efforts for substation systems.

Position Summary

The Substation Engineer 2 develops standard electrical substation design packages and provides construction and commissioning support for electric utility projects. The role performs engineering calculations, coordinates with civil/structural and protection and control teams, supports equipment specification and field activities, and maintains accurate design documentation while helping ensure projects align with applicable industry and regulatory standards.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET-accredited university in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in substation engineering, design, or operations within the electric utility industry.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required.
  • Four years of experience in substation engineering, design, or operations within the electric utility industry preferred.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of substation equipment and layouts, including grounding and clearance fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with the regulatory environment, including PUCT, ERCOT, and NERC requirements and expectations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and the ability to use CAD and basic engineering analysis tools.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and cross-functional coordination skills.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and analysis tools such as ETAP or ASPEN preferred.
  • Exposure to construction methods and commissioning workflows preferred.
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds and sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to drive a company vehicle as needed and operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to work safely in outdoor and high-voltage environments and in areas where pets, wildlife, poison oak, poison ivy, or insect stings may be present.
  • Ability to travel occasionally and work extended hours during project commissioning and outage support.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Texas driver's license.
