Amtrak seeks a Substation Trainee in New Jersey to build, install, test and maintain substation equipment and batteries. The role includes operating the substation and securing necessary power clearances, with a hands-on training pathway.

The position requires basic electrical knowledge, a valid driver’s license (CDL within 90 days), and fluent English. A strong attendance and safety record are expected, with potential for wage progression per bargaining agreements.

Qualifications

• Basic electrical theory and the desire to learn.
• Current valid driver's license at hire (maintained).
• CDL license within 90 days of hire; FMCSA checks MVR for disqualifiers.
• Able to read/write/speak English clearly, with radio/telephone use.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs or more.

Responsibilities

• Construct, install, test and maintain substation switching apparatus, control cables and batteries.
• Operate substation and obtain power clearances.
