Job summary

Actalent seeks a motivated Substation Designer to develop construction drawings and models for substations. You will supervise junior designers, ensure design quality, and coordinate with other departments to deliver detailed layouts and diagrams.

The role involves leading small projects, mentoring teammates, and producing comprehensive drawings using Autodesk Inventor or MicroStation. Remote-friendly with engineering supervision support.

Qualifications

• Six years of experience designing physical layouts and BOMs.
• Six years of design experience using Autodesk Inventor.
• Experience checking design packages preferred.
• Associate degree in applied science (AAS) in drafting/CAD or related field.

Responsibilities

• Develop substation design layout with guidance from Design Engineer.
• Create 2D drawings and 3D models of substation features using Inventor or MicroStation.
• Develop and modify layouts and assemblies in 2D/3D.
• Create single-line diagrams, station location plans, and cable plans.
• Use ProjectWise to track design modifications and documentation.
• Supervise and mentor junior designers.
• Act as SME for Substation Design and lead small projects.

The position falls within the substation department of the organization. The designer will develop construction drawings for substations projects. They will supervise and mentor lower level designers.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

• With scoping information and general guidance from Design Engineer, develop a substation design layout
• Independently develop 2-D drawings and 3-D models of electrical substation features and components, such as transformers, circuit breakers, etc. using MicroStation or AutoDesk Inventor.
• Develop layout of parts and assemblies in 2-D and 3-D
• Modify and/ or update existing models, assemblies, and layouts to reflect changes to the design
• Work with part naming and numbering conventions; and file naming and management protocols
• Create or modify physical drawings such as single line diagrams, station location plans, electrical assemblies, cable and conduit plans, cable schedules, grounding plans, duct bank designs and layouts, and other details and drawings that will provide sufficient detail and information to construct an electrical substation with minimal guidance of project lead engineer
• Use ProjectWise for project documentation to track all design modifications and new designs
• Handle complex projects without supervision
• Coordinate with people from other departments who are involved in a design project
• Supervise and mentor less experienced designers
• Check and validate drawings for the project and the drawings of peers and subordinates
• Will be considered a Subject Matter Expert for Substation Design
• Function as project lead on small, less complicated projects with little guidance from an engineer
• Work under supervision of engineers

Education And Experience Requirements

• Six years of experience designing physical layouts, equipment layouts, plan views, elevation views, section views, and creating detailed bills of material
• Six years of design experience using Autodesk Inventor
• Experience checking design packages preferred.
• Associate degree in applied science (AAS) in drafting and computer aided (CAD) design or in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering technology or equivalent experience and/or education

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of New Albany, OH.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
