Job summary

AES Ohio is seeking a Substation Design Engineer to join our Dayton Service Building team. This on-site role involves detailed design work for 12kV through 345kV substations, including layouts, protection schematics, and wiring diagrams. You will support field crews, contribute to project planning, and help maintain design standards.

Qualified candidates hold an ABET-accredited B.S. in Electrical Engineering, with FE exam progress, familiarity with substation equipment, and proficiency in CAD

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited B.S. in Electrical Engineering required.
• Passing grade on the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.
• Familiarity with electrical substation equipment (transformers, breakers, relays, etc.).
• Ability to work safely and integrate safety into engineering designs.
• Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Access).

Responsibilities

• Design substations from 12kV to 345kV including layouts, protections, and wiring diagrams.
• Produce detailed design packages per AES Ohio standards and industry norms.
• Prepare procurement specs and coordinate with Purchasing for PO issuance.
• Provide engineering support to field crews during construction and maintenance.
• Assist planning, design, and construction management of substation projects.
• Maintain and optimize internal design standards and databases.

This is a fully on-site role at our Dayton Service Building, where you’ll play a key part in delivering reliable energy solutions and supporting critical projects.Key ResponsibilitiesPerform detailed design of all or parts of 12kV through 345kV substations consisting of physical layouts, one-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, and wiring diagrams.Produce detailed engineering design packages in accordance with AES Ohio and relevant industry standards (IEEE, NERC, etc.).Prepare procurement specifications for material and services, evaluate proposals, and work with Purchasing to obtain purchase orders.Provide engineering support to field crews on construction and maintenance activities.Assist in the planning, design, and construction management of substation projects.Maintain and optimize internal design standards and engineering databases.Assist in after-hours storm restoration and long duration customer outages as required.QualificationsBachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.Preferred Skills & AbilitiesExperience with Bentley MicroStation or similar CAD software.Passing grade on the Fundamentals of Engineering ExamFamiliarity with and application of electrical substation equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, instrument transformers, disconnect switches, relays, etc.)Ability to work safely and integrate safety into engineering designs.
