Kids for the Future in Chicago seeks an Electrical Engineer with 4+ years of utility-scale substation design experience. A PE in Illinois is a plus.

The role provides engineering and technical direction for electrical studies, reports, plans, specifications, and construction drawings for substations. You will design P&C schemes, prepare detailed drawings, and ensure compliance with NERC/FERC/IEEE standards while collaborating with SCADA and operations teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering required.
  • 4+ years of utility-scale substation design experience.
  • PE license in Illinois is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering and technical direction to project managers and staff in electrical studies, reports, plans, specs, and drawings.
  • Design and develop P&C schemes for substations, including relay logic, breaker failure, and bus differential protection.
  • Prepare and review one-line, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and logic diagrams.
  • Provide P&C design documents and support BOM development.
  • Guide creation of complete substation drawing packages (protection/control and physical design).
  • Respond to complex inquiries and provide field support during commissioning, troubleshooting, and fault investigations.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC, FERC, IEEE, and regional standards (MRO, SERC).
  • Collaborate with SCADA, communications, and operations teams to integrate protection with control centers.
  • Monitor progress, ensure design specs are met within schedule and budget.
  • Provide directions to project staff for coordination and accuracy of deliverables.
  • Interpret wiring diagrams and schematics with high accuracy.
  • Support cost estimation and material/labor estimates.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff.
  • Support proposal development, budgeting, and AR tracking.
  • May sign/seal drawings depending on policy.
  • Follow employee and safety manuals.

David Mason + Assocaites' Power & Utilities Team is looking for an Electrical Engineer to with previous P&C Substation Design experience to join our Chicago-based team. Our ideal candidate holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering & has 4+ years of utility-scale substation design. Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Illinois is a plus!

  • Ensure compliance with NERC, FERC, IEEE, and regional reliability standards (e.g., MRO, SERC).
  • Collaborate with SCADA, communications, and operations teams to integrate protection systems with control centers.
  • Monitor project progress, ensure design specifications are met, and perform work within established schedules and budgets.
  • Provide directions to project staff to ensure coordination, completeness, and accuracy of technical deliverables.
  • Interpret and review wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical specifications with a high level of accuracy.
  • Support the engineer’s opinion of probable construction cost and assist in estimating materials, equipment, and labor.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members and support their training and development.
  • Support proposal development, project budgeting, billing, and accounts receivable tracking.
  • May sign/seal drawings or other required documentation based on division and firm policies
  • Follow and abide by the employee and safety manuals
