Job summary

Elevate CCBHC in Iowa is hiring a Substance Use Counselor focused on new patient assessments and intake documentation. You will complete biopsychosocial and ASAM assessments, draft initial treatment plans for IOP/Partial Hospitalization, and facilitate groups, including rotating Saturdays.

The role requires a CADC or tCADC license in Iowa, with a small caseload for individual sessions and ongoing ASAM reviews. Collaboration with clinical teams is essential to deliver high-quality care.

Qualifications

  • Current CADC or tCADC license in Iowa.
  • Experience working with individuals with substance use disorders/co‑occurring mental health issues required.

Responsibilities

  • Assess applicants to determine level of care and program fit.
  • Admit client into treatment and complete documentation in a timely manner.
  • Utilize assessment tools during intake (ASAM, Columbia, Suicide Risk, Biopsychosocial, etc.).
  • Add client to the IBHRS database for admission episode.
  • Coordinate admission with Client Orientation Handbook and Elevate staff.
  • Conduct client urinalysis tests at admission and complete initial treatment plan.
  • Provide direct confidential substance abuse counseling to clients and families (individual & group).
  • Develop and modify treatment plans with measurable goals based on client needs.
  • Collaborate with mental health providers, doctors, nurses, social workers, and community services.

Job description

This position does require a CADC or tCADC license in Iowa.

This Substance Use Counselor position will have a primary focus on all new patient assessments and intake documentation. This includes completing all required releases, assessments including the biopsychosocial and initial ASAM. This position will also be responsible for the initial treatment plan for those entering the Intensive Outpatient or Partial Hospitalization level of care. Facilitating groups will also be required of this position, including rotating Saturdays if needed. This position will also have to have a small caseload for individual sessions, ongoing asams and treatment plans when needed.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Assess applicants to determine level of care and the appropriateness of the program for the individual.
  • Admit client into treatment, accurately completing all required documentation, in a timely manner.
  • Utilize assessment tools (including, but not limited to, ASAM, Columbia, Suicide Risk Assessment, Biopsychosocial assessment, etc. ) during the intake process.
  • Add client to the IBHRS database for admission episode.
  • Utilize the Client Orientation Handbook, when coordinating new clients’ admission into our programs.
  • Work with Peer support specialist/RA for gaining access to the dorm.
  • Work with Behavior Tech regarding belongings, what they can keep or where to store items.
  • Work directly with other Elevate staff (including Clinical Director, Nurses, Technicians, etc.) in order to provide the highest level of care for clients.
  • Conduct client urinalysis tests at admission.
  • Complete the initial treatment plan with client.
  • Provide direct confidential substance abuse counseling to clients and families in both an individual and group setting.
  • Develop client treatment plans with measurable goals and objectives based on individual client strengths and needs.
  • Review and modify such treatment plans as needed to correspond with changes in clients' status and within the IDPH standards and CARF standards.
  • Educate clients and families about addiction issues and available services or programs, making appropriate referrals when necessary.
  • Coordinate with other professionals, such as mental health providers, doctors, nurses, social workers, courts, probation officers, community services, or other post‑treatment agencies.
  • Exhibits cultural competency by being knowledgeable and aware of the various cultures in our service area.
  • Complete all required documentation in Elevate electronic health record as well as the IDPH required database.
  • Knowledge of the current IDPH data reporting system and the current standards for IDPH and CARF.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of the federal drug and alcohol confidentiality law (42 C.F.R. Part 2) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Must have considerable knowledge in the current American Society of Addiction Medicine patient placement criteria and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual as it relates to substance‑related disorders or the able to acquire the knowledge.
  • Must have knowledge of different approaches to counseling and accepted clinical practices.
  • Must have knowledge of Code of Ethics for substance abuse counseling.
  • Ability to perform core functions accepted for Behavioral Health Professionals.
  • Ability to work with diverse population.
