Job Title: Substitute Bus Driver

Duties and responsibilities of a Substitute Teacher

  • Qualifications

    Education/Certification:

    • Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

    • Must be 18 years of age

    • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam

    • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training

    • Ability to follow written and verbal instru ctions

    • Ability to use maps and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to quickly learn, follow routes, and locate addresses on short notice

    • Ability to manage student behavior effectively in dynamic, sub-driver settings

    • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and transportation personnel

    • Ability to operate school bus safely

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Vehicle Operation

  • Drive bus as needed on assigned routes, adhering to established schedules and instructions provided for sub assignments.

  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities, athletic events, and field trips as assigned.

  • Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes, making necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.

  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure the bus can be operated safely; notify supervisor of needed repairs.

  • Keep assigned bus clean and maintain appropriate fuel levels during use.

  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems promptly, completing required reports.

Student Management

  • Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations.

  • Supervise students while they board, ride, and leave the bus, and while crossing the street.

  • Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students.

  • Report student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator, communicating with teachers and parents regarding behavior when warranted.

  • Perform emergency evacuation of students on the bus when situations warrant.

Safety

  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.

  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment (first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, reflector).

  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report uncorrectable conditions to supervisors; report hazardous route conditions.

  • Install snow chains during inclement weather as required.

  • Maintain required safety certifications.

Other

  • Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office and other drivers.

  • Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports for assigned shifts, including mileage, gas/oil consumption, and passenger counts.

  • Tools/Equipment Used: School bus, two-way radio, Global Positioning System (GPS), safety equipment (flares, reflective signs, fire extinguisher).

  • Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, pushing/pulling.

  • Motion: Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent stair climbing, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching.

  • Lifting: Limited light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).

  • Environment: On-call, intermittent schedule; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles; irregular hours based on sub availability and assignment needs.

  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress, particularly when adapting quickly to unfamiliar routes or student groups.
