Company Description:

MDSG Studio is a custom glassblowing studio that collaborates with some of the most exciting decorative, art, and luxury lighting studios on the east coast.

The Studio:

Located in the arts community of Long Island City, New York. The space is part of a beautiful ivy-covered 19th-century building with a view of a plant-filled cobblestone courtyard. Collectively, our team has decades of experience creating contemporary glass with extensive knowledge in free-blown glass, mold blown, glass casting, stained glass, fusing, slumping, and cold-working techniques.

The Role:

As a member of our studio team you will be responsible for assisting the Lead Gaffer, Studio Manager and various freelance glass artists. We are looking for someone with a passion for the art of glass as well as the local glass artist community. You will not only work with our immensely talented studio team but our sister companies that are focused on custom lighting and mirror manufacturing. This position reports directly to the Lead Gaffer.

Responsibilities:
  • Hot Shop – daily preparation and organization.
  • Cold Shop – daily preparation and organization
  • Weekly furnace charging and documentation
  • Color bar organization and inventory tracking
  • Studio supplies organization and stocking – packaging, glass, gas, belts, discs, etc etc
  • Manage assigned responsibilities, milestones and deadlines.
  • Continuous improvement at all levels.
  • Attention to detail and overall passion for quality glass.
Requirements:
  • BFA or MFA with a focus upon the glass arts.
  • 2-4+ years experience
  • Experience in lighting or technical fields is a plus
  • 2D sketch communication for internal brainstorming
  • 3D CAD – Solidworks – basic understanding is a plus
  • Adobe – Illustrator and Photoshop – basic understanding
  • Critical thinking, the ability to foresee problems and suggest multiple solutions.
  • Mechanical Aptitude. Strong mechanical aptitude with an eye for the details
  • Great communication skills are a must, this is a truly collaborative team environment. Positive and professional attitude, with a willingness to learn.
Compensation:

Freelance, 40+hrs/week, $25-40/hr starting based upon experience. After 6 month there will be an opportunity for a full-time salaried position, full benefits with 401k. Salary based upon experience.
