Job summary

Baton Rouge General is seeking a PRN transporter to safely move patients to and from the Cardiovascular Diagnostic Lab. The role includes handling charts and supplies, maintaining equipment, and ensuring patient safety with infection control practices.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Transports patients to and from the Cardiovascular Diagnostic Lab.
  • Transfers patients from bed to stretcher or wheelchair following infection control and body mechanics procedures.
  • Notifies patient care staff on patient arrival and logs transports per department practice.
  • Maintains cleanliness and serviceability of transport equipment and reports repairs as needed.

JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION: To safely transport patients to and from all assigned locations in a timely manner. Retrieves medical records, and supplies as required. Maintains and cleans equipment. Job performed appropriately for the age population served as defined in the department’s scope of service.

JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Transports patients to and from the Cardiovascular Diagnostic Lab.
    • Transports patient to destination, following all BRGMC rules and procedures.
    • Identifies self to staff on unit; retrieves patient charts/notes as needed.
    • Transfers patients from bed to stretcher or wheelchair, following proper Infection Control and body mechanic procedures.
    • Properly drapes/covers patient.
    • Requests assistance from patient care staff as needed.
    • Notifies patient care staff on receiving unit of patient’s arrival.
    • Ensures call button, phone, T.V. controls, etc. are within patient’s reach, if appropriate, and all patient safety needs are completed before leaving room.
    • Reports in to charge nurse immediately upon completion of assignment; accurately logs all transports per departmental practice.
  • Performs patient care assignments promptly and courteously as directed by registered nurse and/or physician.
    • Provides lifting services to patient care staff as requested.
    • Handles and/or delivers medications as assigned, in a safe and secure manner.
    • Assists with the transport of specimens in accordance with universal precaution policy.
    • Perform effectively in emergency response situations in accordance with BRGMC policies and procedures.
  • Maintains cleanliness and serviceability of transport equipment.
    • Follows BRGMC policies and procedures related to the operation and maintenance of equipment.
    • Cleans stretchers, wheelchairs, etc. according to established Infection Control guidelines.
    • Reports repair needs to dispatcher upon discovery.
    • Removes damaged/unsafe equipment from usage.
    • Checks quantity gauges and exchanges oxygen tanks, regulators, racks, etc. as needed.
    • Returns all equipment to proper location at end of shift.
  • Practises appropriate safety, environmental, and infection control procedures.
    • Disposes of soiled linen properly; distributes clean linen bags.
    • Actively participates in maintaining the cleanliness of the patient care environment and nursing station.
    • Ensures patient safety by adhering to BRGMC Safety Policy
    • Performs or assists others to perform proper isolation procedures, and infection control measures.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Prior experience in hospital setting preferred.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED preferred.

SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
  • Able to lift, carry and transport patients of various body weights.
  • Able to understand and carry out instructions. Dependable and motivated to complete duties without constant supervision. Able to interact appropriately with a diverse population of customers.
HIPAA REQUIREMENTS:

Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Medical records w/o limitation both paper and electronic, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, medical records related to quality data, patient financial information, patient billing 3rd party, patient related complaints, information related to patient location, patient religious beliefs, research information and/or public health records.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, transportation of patients, and monitoring clinical alarms.
