++JOB SUMMARY++

The Adult Education Student Support Specialist provides comprehensive support to adult learners across the college’s five-county service area. The position promotes student success by identifying barriers, connecting students with resources, and providing individualized guidance and support. The Specialist works collaboratively with instructors, staff, and community partners to support student engagement, retention, persistence, and completion.

** The Adult Education Program is a grant-funded initiative; therefore, employment is contingent upon the terms and duration of the grant contract. Employment is not guaranteed and may be terminated at the College’s discretion. All employees are required to review, sign, and adhere to the terms outlined in their employment contract.

++ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS++

Student Support (45%)

  • Provide individualized guidance and support throughout the enrollment, instructional, and completion process, including orientation, intake, registration, goal setting, scheduling, and navigation of Adult Education services.
  • Establish positive relationships with students, monitor attendance and progress, and provide timely communication and referrals to promote engagement, persistence, retention, and completion.
  • Respond to student inquiries and collaborate with instructors, staff, and community partners to coordinate services and address student needs.

Records & Compliance (35%)

  • Maintain confidential student records, files, testing documentation, and program data in accordance with federal, state, institutional, and program requirements.
  • Administer and proctor standardized assessments and official practice exams in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with program reporting and ensure required documentation is complete, accurate, and current.

Program Operations (15%)

  • Coordinate student appointments, orientations, testing sessions, and other program activities; provide office management coverage as needed.
  • Support recruitment, community outreach, special events, and other activities that increase awareness and participation in Adult Education services.

Additional Support Duties (5%)

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

++EQUIPMENT++

Work activities routinely involve the use of standard office equipment, including computers, printers, copiers, scanners, telephones, and other related devices. Employees are expected to perform tasks such as data entry, document preparation, email communication, and report generation using these tools.

++KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES++

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.). to create documents, manage data, prepare reports, and support daily operations, as needed.
  • Ability to learn data system and related record-keeping procedures to ensure accurate documentation, compliance, and tracking of student progress.
  • Knowledge of the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), Observed Performance Test (OPT), Adult Education policies and procedures, and student assessment processes, with the ability to administer assessments, maintain accurate testing records, support student placement, and ensure compliance with program and testing requirements.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and manage multiple tasks effectively while meeting deadlines, working independently with minimal supervision, and collaborating as part of a team.
  • Ability to prepare and present information clearly for both small and large groups, while maintaining professional and ethical standards in all interactions with students, staff, and the community.
  • Ability to travel to satellite locations throughout the five-county service area and maintain a flexible schedule, including one evening per week to conduct student orientations, as well as participate in required professional development and staff training.
  • Preferred experience:
  • Prior experience in Adult Education services.

  • Office support (e.g., customer services, scheduling, document preparation, data entry, event coordination, etc.).
  • Student services (e.g., student advising, success/retention initiatives, career services, admissions/enrollment services, etc.).
  • Valid driver’s license.

++JOB LOCATION++

This on-site position is based in the Adult Education Department located at the Athens Industrial Adult Education Location in McMinn County, Tennessee. Additionally, this position requires travel to alternate locations served through the Adult Education Program, including, but not limited to, the Cleveland State Community College Vonore Campus, Meigs County, and Athens industrial locations within the College’s five-county service area.
