Job summary

HCA Healthcare seeks Nurse Externship students to join our nursing teams across seven Kansas City hospital locations. This PRN opportunity supports active nursing students working toward RN degrees and may start after fundamentals completion.

As an extern, you will help with ADLs, monitor vitals, assist with basic nursing tasks, document care, and communicate with the team. You’ll gain hands-on experience under supervision, while focusing on safe, compassionate patient care and professional

Qualifications

• High School Graduate / GED.
• Enrolled in Nursing Fundamentals in a Registered Nurse Degree Program (Associates or Bachelors Pending).
• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.

Responsibilities

• Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene
• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency
• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated
• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery
• Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment
• Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan

Education

*Hospitals include: Overland Park Regional Medical Center (Overland Park, Kansas), Menorah Medical Center (Overland Park, Kansas), Belton Regional Medical Center(Belton, Missouri), Lee's Summit Medical Center(Lee's Summit, Missouri), Centerpoint Medical Center(Independence, Missouri), Research Medical Center(Kansas City, Missouri), and Research Psychiatric Center(Kansas City, Missouri) , Lafayette Regional Health Center (Lexington, Missouri)

• Openings vary based on what is open at the time and can change quickly. We do not have openings on all units for Nurse Externs that we do for Graduate Nurse positions
• Must be actively enrolled in nursing school Junior status in an Registered Nurse degree program, Enrolled in Nursing Fundamentals course which must be completed by Start Date. May apply and accepted a position while enrolled in class.

• Earn 4 hours of paid shadow time with a Registered Nurse for every 24 hours worked.
• Shorter shifts available from your standard 12 hour shifts. (We offer 12 hour shifts as standard but recognize that a shorter shift may be preferred to balance school, you can work 4, 6, 8, etc)
• Opportunity to interview first with HCA for New Graduate Nurse positions as you get closer to graduation
