Job summary

San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office is seeking part-time Student Law Clerks for Fall 2026 and later in Stockton, CA. A background check and pre-employment drug screening are required.

Applicants must have completed at least one year of law school and maintain eligibility for the position. Under supervision, Student Law Clerks will study laws and precedents, assist in drafting briefs and opinions, perform research, and support attorneys with case preparation.

  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Student Law Clerks must maintain continued enrollment and satisfactory progress in a recognized law school in order to hold this classification.
  • Note: Supplemental application must be submitted with employment application.

Pre-Employment Drug Screening and Background: Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and a background investigation as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made unless the eligible has passed the drug screen and successfully completed the background process.

Under the leadership of District Attorney Ron Freitas, the San
Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office is committed to serving
our community and supporting victims of crime while upholding a
fair and just criminal justice system. As the County’s elected chief
prosecutor, the District Attorney represents the People of the
State of California in criminal and related civil matters before the
Superior Court of San Joaquin County.

With more than 300 attorneys, investigators, and professional
support staff, the District Attorney’s Office serves the community
from locations throughout San Joaquin County, including
downtown Stockton, the Juvenile Justice Center in French Camp,
and branches of the Superior Court in Lodi and Manteca.

The Office is seeking hardworking and motivated individuals for
upcoming temporary Student Law Clerk opportunities. This
recruitment is intended for individuals who have completed one year of law school.

Studies, interprets, and applies laws, court
decisions, and other legal authorities for
use in the preparation of cases, opinions,
and briefs.

Assists attorneys in the preparation of
deeds, contracts, pleadings, resolutions,
and legal opinions.

Confers with others regarding the collection
of facts; investigates facts relating to
proposed or pending litigation.

Assists in the preparation of
correspondence and reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE

The principles and practices of legal research methods; preparation of briefs and opinions; the principles of law and their application.

ABILITY

Analyze and apply legal principles, facts, evidence, and precedence to legal problems; learn to present statements of law, fact, and argument clearly and logically in written and oral form; perform research and assist in the preparation of legal opinions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Selection Procedures

Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination. If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

Testing Accommodation: Candidates who require testing accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) must call Human Resources Division at (209) 468-3370 prior to the examination date.

Physical Exam : Some classifications require physical examinations. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination. The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam: Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen. The County pays for the initial drug screen.

Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
